of lyrics and musical plays will
portray himself In a film called
Main Mtieel to Itroadway." It will
be a co-operative affair featuring
most of the Broadway stars and
benefiting the Council for the Liv
ing nieater. The latter Is aimed
at pumping life back Into the Irgll
theater, now undergoing one ol Its
periodic Illnesses.
Hammerstein was here to visit
his grandchildren and the touring
company of "Houth Pacific." when
we asked him about his two widely
separated acting chores.
"The first was when I was a
young man," lie related. "I was
stage manager for one of my
uncle's plays, and the script caned
for the stage manager to come
onstage and say a few lines. Ho

some good plays. But there were
lots of others running that were
pretty bad.
