new ambassador told President
Truman Thurfilay the Soviet gov
ernment is 'striving to maintain
friendly political, economic and
cultural relations" with the United
States.
Truman, in turn, assured the
Ambassador that the people ol this
country have "only the friendliest
feelings" for the people of Russia.
The President has mnde similar
statements before, drawing ft dis
tinction between the Soviet people
and Soviet leaders.
The envoy, Georgl N. Znrubin,
presented his credentials to Tru
man at the White House in a
three-minute face to fnce meeting.
He brushed aside reporters ques
tions, after reading a brief state
ment, except to say that "It's not
true" that Moscow is waging a
hate America campaign.
The brief time they spent to
gether, Zarubln's manner and
other signs indicated that the
meeting was n coldly formal one.
On some past occasions Truman
has orally chastised envoys ot
Soviet satellite countries.
Znrubin, for six years a Soviet
ambassador to Britain, was trans
ferred here Inst week to succeed
Alexander 8. Pnnyushkln who was
shifted to Red China.
Zarubln was Soviet envoy to
Canada at the time if the atomic
spy trlBls but was exonerated
from personal connection with the
case.
Voters Reject
School Measure

three measures which would have
established nnd provided hinds lor
free public kindergartens.
The school board agreed to put
the proposals on a special election
ballot following petitions. However,
the board opposed the measures,
suggesting that all available hauls
at this time are needed to expand
facilities for school-age youngsters.
The three measures would have
authorized the kindergartens, pro
vided construction funds, and set
up a serial levy for first year op
erating costs,

It Is expected that the new build

two months. Already about 40 hours
of volunteer labor has been given
bv the members of the church.

The work ts being financed by
cash contributions and pledges over
a period of 24 months by mem

The need of a children's home
was made evident after a number
of babies and small children were
left at the Brown home. The Faith
Children's Home was established
in 1U51 and 29 children taken In.
Little Jean had been in the home
a few days when she ask one of
the workers what they were going
to have for dinner. The reply was,
"Beans, potatoes, cabbage, to
matoes, bread and fruit juice.'"
Looking up, Jean said, "You all
have plenty of light bread here,
then we won't never have to starve
to death no more will we?"
