Police Quoted Mrs. Howard R.
Vermillion, 29. as saying she in

At least it changed the life of
Ross Bagdasarlan. He's the guy
who was responsible for "Come
Ona Mv House." which was driv
ing the nation buggy a year ago.
Yes. his cousin. William Saroyan.
aLso got credit lor the composition.
but nis contribution was reporieuiy
slight.
Anyway, the aong completely ai.
tered the life of Bagdasarlan.
between show business and grapes.
Ross let s call him by his easier
first name Is a member of that
tribe of Americans oi Armenian
ancestry who have settled In the
warm San Joaquin valley, prin
cipally around Fresno. He is a
hanpv extrovert, full of the Joy of
living. He might have steooed out
of a Saroyan play, which indeed
he has.
The lad abandoned the family
trade graDes to follow his fa
mous cousin. Ross appeared In two
Saroyan piays on Droaaway
Time of Your Life." in which
he played the pin-ball maniac, and

"After I got out of the service.

Fresno and raise grapes," he re

music publishers' doors. He had
written "Come Ona My House" 10
years before but had never been
able to interest anyone In It. He
still had no luck.
"I tried It with nearlv everv
singer." he said, "but they all
turned It down. Peggv Lee and
Dave Barbur said It was too late
in the summer to put It out.
Franklc Lain- said dialect songs
never sold. The Andrews Sisters
weren't interested."
Finally he sent a record of the
song east with a friend, who was
instructed to plav It for Kav Ar
man. Still nothing hapoene.1. Some
time later he learned that Kav
Arman had recorded the song, and
so had a new singer named Rose,
mary Clooney, then things started
pooping.
"Mv luck changed." Koss said.
In the past year. I've had two
hit songs (the other: 'What's the
Use." recorded by Jonnny Kay
and acted In six pictures."
Ross, who Is currently playing
a land-locked vllor In "60 Saddles
for Oobl." said the film roles re
sulted from his songwriting fame
He said he also receives manu
scripts from hopeful songwriters.
' I just got u songs irom a Kid from
Michigan. Ross remarked. "He said
he had been In New York three
days and couldn't get his aong ac
cepted. AH I could tell him was to
be patient. It took me 10 years.'
Although Ross is thriving in his
present profession, he hasn t for
gotten his old one. He manages
to get the word "grape" Into the
lyrics of everv song he writes.

billion dollars worth of weapons,
military equipment, and supplies
from North Atlantic Pact countries
during the year ending next July
The offshore orders will cover
planes, tanks, ammunition, elec
tronic equipment, auxiliary com
bat ships and other gear, mostly
for European armed forces.
Informed officials disclosed the
slr.e of the new offshore procure
