THOUSANDS OF BOOKS were, delivered during the summer months to many out-lying com
munities in Klamath County by the Bookmobile, loaded every day from the shelves of the Klam
. ath County library. Largest station served was Crater Lake where around 100 adult books

When Rita Hayworth does the
Dance of the Seven Veils In her
forthcoming picture, "Salome,"
there will be wolf calls audible
from Portland, Maine, to Portland,
Oregon.
The flaming Rita, of course, can
take the bows, but . there should
be a few for the young woman

movement.
She is Valerie Bettts. a glamor
girl herself, who was born in Texas
and has won wide acclaim both as
choreographer and as a dancer
in such Broadway hits as "Inside
USA." "Great to Be Alive and
"Bless You All." Incidentally, she
Is making her film debut as the
"other woman" in we current nay.

Miss Bettis, who looks, ads and
talks like a Juvenile Tauuian Bank
head, was hired by Columbia to
stage Rita's dances and wound up
playing a pert In the picture when
an alert casting director spotted
her on the set.
Figuring out the "Dance of the
Seven Veils" was no small chore,
savs Valerie, since the Hollywood
version of "Salome" differs dras
tically from the familiar Oscar
Wilde conception. . Hollywood
makes Salome a nice girl, who
does her famous dance to save the
life of John the Baptist Instead of
demanding his bead on a platter.
Bays Valerie:
"Working out the Dance of the
Seven Veils with no head and no
platter was, as. you can see, a
sharp break with tradition. But we
did it." .
SUBTLE
In the dance Rita wears the
seven veils, all right, and each is
a different color. Here Valerie did
some neat calculating, too, making
the outer veil black, and progres
sing through the cool colors sucn
as peacock blue and purple.

final veil, which is, natch, flesh
colored.
Valerie does not appear in "Sa
lome," but the mark of her genius
is plainly visible in the spectacular
choreography. She gives full credit
to Rita, however, saying:
"Rita is a natural dancer. Her
arm and hand movements Dartic
ularly are pure music. She has a
rhythmic sense which is a Joy to
a dance director. And my original
conception of the dance, of course,
is adapted to her own personal
ity." How does Miss Bettis work out a
new dance routine? She isn't quite
sure, but says:
"Usually I Just sit and brood,
and listen to the music, and then
all at once I see it.
"I work out some of the rou
tines myself, and then work with
the star, so that in tne end the
dance is a blend of what I thought
of first and the star s interpreta
tion of it."
Valerie had her first stage part
In the class play at Houston's Sid
ney Laniar Junior High School.
