PORTLAND Ml Chances of a
sleeping sickness epidemic in Ore
gon such as has taken 34 lives in
California, are remote, the State
Board of Health reported Tuesday.
The disease encephalitis is
carried by a certain species of
mosquito, which is occasionally
found here.
Dr. S. B. Osgood, epidemiologist
for the board of health, said. "Au
gust Is the month fox disease-carrying
mosquitoes and it now is
close to the end of the season.
We could have a few cases but I
doubt any wide-spread epidemic."
Meantime Mayor Dorothy Mc
Cullough Lee reported that Port
land's mosquito control program
was a success despite an almost
unprecedented hatch of mosquito
larvae.
Spray pilots have spent 500 hours
In the air and have sprayed 27.000
gallons of DDT solution. Last year
only 19,000 gallons were used.

ALL IN A DAY British Canberra jet bomber, shown above, set world's record by winging
across Atlantic and back again in 10 hours, 3 minutes total time. Trip was from Aldersgrove,
North Ireland to Gander, Newfoundland, and return. Tim for East-West crossing was four
hours and 33 minutes and the trip back three hours and 29 minutes. Slightly mora than two
hours was spent in Gander for lunch.

still in jail.
The 130-pound, 23-year-old Miller
got stuck Monday night as he at
tempted to wiggle through an eight
Inch square opening at the bottom
of his cell bars.
It was 15 hours later when they
finally got him unstuck with a
blowtorch.
Miller, who has served about 40
davs of a 60-dav bad check sen
tence, claimed to Sheriff Edgar
Probst he wasn't trying to escape:
"Just wanted to see if I could get
outside."
The sheriff had a different Idea,
from a mattress woven into a rope
and an Iron bar missing; from a
mess table in Miller's cell.

In an unanimous decision, the
seven-man court Tuesday upheld
the 24-year-old former Joplln, Mo.
dishwasher's conviction and death
sentence for January, 1951, slaying
of Robert Hilton Dewev, Seattle
oil salesman, near El Ceiitro, Callt.
Cook was sentenced to death by
trial Judge Luray J. Mouser last
November after a Jury found that
Cook was sane at the time of the
slaying.
California law requires the state
supreme court to automatically re
view first degree murder convic
tions and death sentences.
The court held there was ample
testimony "from which the Jurv
could infer that the defendent knew
what he was doing and knew the
difference between right and
wrong."
