Important developments in modern
Middle-Eastern politics:' a means
ol ral.'ilng living alandards of the
poorest class of peasants who are
easy taritelii of Communism.
Land redistribution la at the top
of Communist promises to the
peasants ol these countries, snd
the move by non-Communist lead
ers robs the Red program of much
of Its sleuin.
Most of the arable land In Iran
Is owned by a small group of
wealthy landlords, and the same Is
true of about a third of the arable
land of Egypt. Both are desert
countries and tillable soli is st a
premium.
Tlie Iranian Bhah, mindful of the
Communist campaign to encourage
.squatters on unsettled lands, told
Hie peasants that in distributing
his privately owned land he want
ed to raise their standard of living.
In September the peasants will
get snnther lift when the Shah's
Reconstruction Bsnk will begin
helping them to buy more land
and equipment. ,
The Shah'a moves come at a
time when tile Nationalist premier,
Mohammed Mossadegh, Is trying
to heal a split In the ranks of his
followers over the Imposition ol
martial law in the turbulent coun
try. He withdrew his bill to extend
the law another month, but said
the lid would be clamped down
tight again if disorders broke out.
Virtual dictator under new pow
ers cranted by Darllnment. Mos
sadegh ran Into opposition of Ayat
ullah Kashanl, powerful Moslem
leader who controls religious fan
atics in the country.
Mossndcgh apparently had feared
that without martial law, the Com
munists might seize advantage of
the disturbed conditions In Iran
and attempt to take over the coun
try. VERTI - BLIND

has confirmed that a large quan
tity of Japanese national treuure
Is missing and that receipts by
occupation officials for some of It

hands. .
"Ws have confirmed the loss of
a considerably large quantity ot
precious metals and diamonds,
including the Empress Nagako's
crown made of gold and platinum
