Ethel Merman Returns To
Films In Call Me Madam
By BOB THOMAS
HOLLYWOOD There can be
no doubt that Ethel Merman Is
back at work in the movies after
a 12-year absence. Her voice can
be heard all over the 20th Century
Fox lot.
That's when she's speaking, of
course. When she's singing, it's
reported she can be heard in Santa
Monica.
I needed no sound device to fol
low her voice to the stage where
she was testing for the screen
version of her broadway hit, "Call
Me Madam." When I arrived, it
appeared that the studio was tak
ing good care of Ethel. There were
about two dozen well-paid workers
on the set, ready to make a test
of her hairdo. Quite a difference
from when she was there last for
"Alexander's Ragtime Band" in
1938.
"I didn't come into the picture
until It was half over," she re
called. But she was glowing about doing
"Call Me Madam."
"I'm certainly happy they saw fit
to let me do It." she remarked.
"I think it's going to be a lot of
fun. The cast (George Sanders.
Vera-Ellen, Donald O'Connor) is
great, and the director, Walter
Lang, is my dream boy."
Will this mean more movies for
Merman?
"Could be. About seven months
ago, I was oflered a Broadway
show for the spring of 1953 I
turned it down because I couldn't
see that far into the future. I don't
know what 1 11 be doing next."
Her film producer, 6ol Slegel
predicts she'll open a whole new
career lor nerseif in the movies.
When she was ln pictures before.
she was competing with other
movie actresses," he told me,
Cooperatives
Hold Meeting
EAST LANSING, Mich. Wl
Conventlonlng members of farm
cooperatives had an admonition
Tuesday to be vigilant against the
tricks' and "deceit" of critics
of cooperative.
Knox T. Hutchinson, assistant
secretary of agriculture, told a
session of the 24th annua meet
ing of the American Institute of
Cooperation that critics "will be
aniplng at co-ops this year and
next year and In years to come."
Paul 8. Armstrong; general man
ager of Sunklst Growers, inc., of
Los Angeles derided those who
call cooperatives socialistic.
"Nothing could be farther from
the truth," he told the convention.
"In fact, a bona fide farmer's
marketing cooperative both in its
organization and operation Is the
very antithesis of socialism. It
could be better and more ade
quately defined as an 'industrial
democracy' "
"Call Men's Hand Lattnrirr When
Thlnra Look Black!" Th. 2-2531.
"Now I think she can carve a
niche all by herself. 8hes the
great; there's no reason why stu
dios can't find pictures for a ma
ture woman of her immense
talent."
The selection of Merman for this
role was something of a novelty,
by Hollywood standards. Her long
list of hit musicals has always
fallen to other stars for the film
versions.
I questioned producer Slegel
about the topical aspects- of "Call
Me Madam." The show was ob
viously based on the diplomatic
career of Perle Mesta and con
tained many allusions to present
day Washington.
We've cut out most of the topi
cal references." the producer said.
"The 'I like Ike' number has been
taken out. since the picture won't
appear untu after the election. If
we left It in and he won, there
wouldn't be any reason for It. If it
was in and he lost, it would sound
like sour grapes. So we have re
placed It with a 1913 Irving Berlin
tune, 'International Rag,' a corny
routine which Merman will do. '
"We've also eliminated the Dean
Acheson character. It wasn't Just
because he might no longer be
secretary of state; his part wasn't
needed in the film version. But
we left in the phone calls to Harry
Truman and the remarks about
Margaret's singing voice."
