Realtor Takes
Bad Tumble
Realtor E. M. Chilcote was taken
to Klamath Valley hospital yester
day by Ealer's ambulance for
treatment of Injuries sustained
while he was showing clients a
borne listed with him.
Chilcote reportedly opened a
wrong door and stepped off unex
pectedly onto the basement stairs,
tumbling to the bottom.
He suffered severe bruises and
a cut in his head required several
stitches. He was released from the
hospital and sent home after treat
ment yesterday afternoon.
Beds Aim Of
AL Campaign
Proceeds from the Amercan Le
gion Auxiliary magazine subscrip
tion campaign now underway are
to go to the purchase of more
hospital beds to be used In the
Klamath Falls, Malin and Tule
lake areas.
Chairman Vera Petrick reported
today the same campaign during
the past four years has secured
the purchase of polio equipment,
an emergency oxygen unit, a baby
incubator and portable hospital
beds and wheel chairs.
Mrs. Petrick suggested that res
idents receiving callers in the cam
paign ask for the letter of authori
zation signed by officers of the Le
gion Auxiliary here. -

D. Eisenhower will have the edi
torial support of more newspapers
than ever before backed a Republi
can presidential nominee in the
traditionally Democratic south.
An Associated Press survey of
nearly 100 papers in 11 Southern
states showed Friday that 41 have
endorsed the general or will do so
and past performance indicates
several in the "undecided" list will
go to him.
Paradoxically, however, this
does not mean that editors of the
area are much more opposed to
the 1952 Democratic candidate. Ad
lai Stevenson, than they were to
President Truman when he ran In
1948.
Four years ago the antl-Ncw
Deal-anti-Fair Deal sentiment was
divided between Thomas Dewey,
the COP nominee, and Strom Thur
mond, choice of the States' Right
ers and these two men drew more
editorial page endorsements than
Truman. That year. 24 of the pa
pers surveyed were lor Dewey,
22 for Thurmond.
At this early stage in the cam
paign, only 22 papers have come
out for Stevenson and Sen. John
Sparkman, the Democrats' vice

here Thursday after 3.300 mile i
"bop-along" flight from Westover,
Mass.
The two flying windmills had
taken off from Keflavik, Iceland,
on . the last and longest hop of
their Atlantic flight.
The experimental flight was
launched by the Military Trans
port Service to test the feasibility
of delivering helicopters to Europe
by air.
The planes started from West
over Air Force Base two weeks
ago on a six-stop.. 4,000 mile flight
to Wiesbaden, Germany.
The bis ships came hovering
down here to make aviation his
tory and break the official heli
copter distance record by more
than 200 miles.
Manning the ships were Capt.
Vincene. H. McGovern. 29. of
Springfield, N. J.: Capt. Harry C.
Jeffers, 27. of Newark. N. J.; 1st
Lt. Harold W. Moore. 26,- of Cin
cinnati. O.. and Capt. George 0.

The idea of proving the reliabil
ity of helicopters on such a flight
was McGovern's.
Early Basin
Resident Dies
According to word just reaching
here, Malcolm Peterson Mickler
Sr., died in Tampa. Florida, on
July 25. at the age of 75. He will
be remembered by earlier resi
dents of the Basin as a former
owner of the Crystal Springs ranch,
now owned by Dr. Paul Sharp. He
lived here for several years, be
ginning about 1910. He bas visited
here several times since.
Mr. Mickler was a member of
an early Florida family, and was
both a lumberman and a stock
man. He made his first (10,000 at
ihe age of 19 in the lumber bus
iness and used the money to go

in the Everglades country of Flor
ida. He was one of the earliest
cross-breeders of Brahmas with na
tive cattle to develop a breed that
could stand the peculiar climate of
that part of Florida.
He came to 'the Basin from Flor
ida, and returned there after dis
posing of his Interests here.

Squadron Wednesday evacuated
668 persons marooned In two areas
by the rampaging Han River In
Korea.
Far East Air Forces said seven
helicopters rescued 608 persons,
mostly Air Force personnel, from
an alrbase In 116 sorties. Pilots
skirted along the river and through
presidential nominee from Alaba
ma. In 1948. J5 of those ques
tion, this year were lined up for
Truman. Presumably, Stevenson's
total will approach that.
This tally includes only papers
in Georgia. Alabama, Mississippi,
Louisiana. Tennessee. Florida. Vir
ginia and the Carollnas which en
dorsed a ticket in 1948 or nave
done so this year.
It covered most of the leading
papers in all the 11 states.
Twelve of the papers endorsing
Truman four years ago have tak
en no stand in this campaign as
yet. and 13 of the editors favor
ing Hie 1948 states rights ticket are
similarly silent thus far In 1953.
Only four papers supporting
Dewey In 1948 have taken no atand
this year, while nine who were neu
tral in the last race now have
thrown their support to Elsenhower.
