Stevenson Wins
(Continued from Page One.)
Tennessee and Richard Russell of
Georgia went before the wildly
cheering convention to capitulate.
8TOOI) BY
Both stood by, waiting to apeak,
during Ihe roll call on the third
and llnul ballot. Kefauver had led
the first and second, with Russell
third behind Stevenson. But after
a dinner recess, the die was cast.
The two hour break gave party
lenders Including President
Truman who had flown In a
chance to get their heads together.
Averell Hurrlinun dropped out ol
the rsee. releasing New York's big
delegation, and that was that.
New York and then Mss-sschu-sella,
freed by Gov. Psul Dever.
went to Hlevenson. At Ihe end of
the roll call he had rolled up 613
votes just 3 short ol the
necessary majority. Then Utah
switched and put him over the top.
' Stevenson picked a running mate
Saturday to help him "talk sense
to the American people" In the
campaign to keep the presidency
In Democratic hands.
The No. 3 plsce was to go to
Sen. John Sparkman of Alabama.
Aides said this choice waa in
line with the governor's determina
tion to have a Southerner "to
strengthen me end our party Im
measurably In the hard. Implac
able work that lies ahead for all
of us."
LEADERS
Leaders called sleepy-eyed dele

thee In this smoke-hszed conven
tion hall at an earlv morn no- hour.
The Illinois governor keynoted
ms own campaign in nis accept
ance speech.
"More Important than winning
the election is governing the na
tion.' he told Uie Democrats so
lemly. "That Is the test of a polit
ical party the acid, final test.
"When Ihe tumult and the snout
ing die. when the bsnds are gone
and the lights are dimmed, there
la the stark reality of responsibil
ity in an hour haunted by tno.se
gaunt, grim specters of strife, dis
sension sno materialism at home
and ruthless, Inscrutable and hos
tile power abroad."
Averting that the "bloodiest,
most turbulent age of the Christ
Ian era la far from over, Steven
son declare):
SACRIFICE
"Sacrifice, patience, understand
ing and implacable purpose may
be our lot for years to come. Let's
lace It. Let's talk sense to the
American people."
Stevenson's talk contrasted
sharply with the "give 'em hell"
speech with which Truman assailed
the Republicans In Introducing the
new standard bearer formally to
the convention.
Truman said the Republicans
had tried to stop progress and
they are at It again this year.
Praising the Democratic platform,
the President said his party Is
going to win again this year.
Applauding the choice of Steven
son, whom he helped along toward
the nomination by getting Harrl
man to withdraw, Truman said he
Is going to "take my coat off and
do everything I can" to help him.
Stevenson, who said he had ac
cepted the nomination humbly in
the belief that better man could
have been found for It, promised
that "I will fight to win. . , with
all my heart and soul." .
