Alter the stranger hod parted

came over and talked a little to
Allen; then he went back to his
car. He was last seen taking on

did not return that night, his car
still being there the following fore

Consequently he mentioned It to a
neighbor, Ransom Steward, that
the man may have fallen and
broken a leg or something. Stew

he should report "man lost, to
the officials? ....
A group of about a half dozen
men got together and formed a
little searching pariy about Sun
day noon. Later they found that
the man was safe was just out
for a little outing and adventure
was doing some prospecting in
. a quiet sort of way; and that he
had told Allen along with other
that hit was coins to camp
overnight. This important fact had
somehow eluded Bill's memory.

side of the lake where they are
pruning pine and fir trees. They
are directed by an experienced tor
ester. Hie object of this project
is to eventually develope a belter
grade of lumber producing forests
of second growth trees. Tney
prune the trees up about 13 feet
irom the ground so long as lha
12 feet does uot exceed over
third of the lotal heishth of the
tree. The limbs are cut off Just
under the bark on the tree trunk
so that the scar will heal quickly.
As the tree develops more cleat
lumber will thus be produced by
the tree in the first log. Raucer
Hayes said that in this way the
forest service aims to make its
new forests yield a higher grade
of lumber as there will be less
knots in the lumber. It also tends
to improve the appearance of the
forest and in a measure helps re
duce tne fire nanard to some ex
tent, he said.
The fire engine was called out
on a grass fire last Tuesday after,
noon July 15, down at the Carroll
Mulkey ranch where some weed
burning got a little out of control.
The spreading fire was quickly
subdued and no damage was re'
ported.
BUI Barrington is up for the
summer from Paradise, cam
where he has been wintering tor
Uie past few years. He w-ill get
some kind of work here during the
summer and win stav with ms
sister. Mrs. Elizabeth Smith.
East Side Grangers met
Monday evening, July 14. for the
purpose of burning the weeds
around their hall but the weeds
were to green and wet to do much
burning so about all that was ac
complished was to make about an
eight foot fire prevention clearing
around the buildings. Those who
attended the "working bee" were
given a feed of water melon and
camaiouoe.
