PORTLAND (A More than one
third of the Union Pacific repair
shop crew here was laid off Satur
day. - ,
Company officials blamed the
steel strike for the layoff of the
300 workers. They are to be re
hired when the strike ends.
Approximately 560 men still are
employed in the shop on light re
pair work.

its installation of power lines to the
peak, said Phil Quisenberry, as
sistant manager for Copco at Lake
view. A building to house most of the
radio equipment has been construct
ed on top of Black Cap, and Don
Strong Is Installing the radio equip
ment. The new Installation will
provide radio-telephone service for
Lakevlew Logging company, wniie

Safety Swim
Classes Held
LAKE VIEW A course for water
safety instructors was conducted
at the municipal pool this week by
Carl Ross, of San Franclseo, re
gional water safety director for
the American Red Cross. Seven
persons are enrolled, including
Don Klstner, Duke Stewart, Ann
Barry, Margaret Kucera, John
Dalen. Melva Bach and Janet
Morris. ,
Classes were held from 6:30 to
9:30 p.m. daily, and those who
completed the course satisfactorily
will be Issued instructor's certifi
cates making them eleglble to in
struct swimming and water safety
courses.
Ol the nine persons who took the
senior life saving course last week
under instruction of Stanley Tooke.

work and qualified for their senior
life saving certificates. The four
were Margaret Kucera, Janet Mor
ris. Duke Stewart and Ann Barry.
The regular swimming lessons at
the pool are continuing. Several
have passed the beginners test and
are now in the Intermediate class.

Bokker. Lief O s t m o. Don Gray.
Charles Vandergraw, Susan Shoultz,
Philip Lana'ey, Carter Franklin,
Jo Ann Groom, David Elliott and
Susan Quisenberry. Several others
will complete the course within
