Claims Woman
EUGENE A 57-year-old
woman died early Friday in a fire
that destroyed a Eugene home.
The body of Mrs. Elsie Keeney,
57, was found in her husband's bed
room after the flames died down.
Coroner Fred Buell reported she

-former sheriff's deputy, said he
dragged her outside after wan
ting up to find his room in flames.

Total Impact of Steel Strike
May be Felt Over Long Period

my by the steel striae.
Its remltlcatloru and costs are
fearfully vast and complex.
It will also take more than a
year before even the direct effects
of the strike have been overcome
by government and Industry, al
though much of the strike's dam
age Is permanent and can never
be completely repaired.
Here are some of the Irreplace
able strike losses:

of the steel workers was estimat

crease In wages won by the strike
won't begin to compensate the
steel workers for their loss.
Hundreds of millions of dollars
worth of production of autos. trucks
farm equipment, appliances and
other major items using steel
which has been lost by the srlke
can only partially be made up by
a, production speea-up later.

the Pacific Maritime Association,
laid the position of the shipowners
on the line Thursday.
"We've made mistakes and we
don t Intend to compound them,"
St. Sure told the Bay area Marl-
time Commission.
"Faced with the probelm of deal
lng with seven or eight unions and
with the bitter friction that exists
between them, it was necessary to
make deals day by day.
"We don't Intend to repeat
them."
St. Sure said shipowners are pre
pared to let Idled ships remain in
port until the Industry wins a long-
term contract and puts a lid on
pyramiding labor costs.
An hour later, a three-hour bar
gaining session got under way. No
progress was reported toward
settling the walkout that had tied
up more than 110 ships and blocked
a normal flow of supplies between
Pacific ports.

treasurer of the Sailors ' Union of
the Pacific, Called "phoney and an
Insult" the PMA's offer a 2 Is per
cent wage increase, the SUP,
which had been holding out for a
5 per cent boost, hiked its demand

Lundeberg said a PMA "package
proposal" to end the strike

bilization (OPS).
A cut from 476 to 181 is listed for
the Pacific Northwest offices, em
bracing Oregon, Washington and
Idaho.
This came nhortly after Econom
ic Stabilizer Roger L, Putnam told
his anti-Inflation agencies Thurs
day to do the best they could with
the 60 million dollars Congress
gave him: He had requested 103
million.
Putnam said OPS would get
$36,900,000, a 45 per cent cut, The
remainder will go ,to enforce rent
and wage controls.
OPS said dismissal ' slips were
being sent out and its fttaff would
be cut to budget size by Sept. 1.
The agency said It would release
about 700 of 2,500 Washington .em
ployes,, Field offices are beinp; di
rected to fire 6,460 of their 0,500
Workers. -'The
biggest cut will be in en
forcement personnel 1,607 of 2,823.
