than ever to deal with the forest
fires expected on Oregon's stale
and private land In the next two
months.

returned only two weeka ago from
20 months of Army duty watch
ing atomic bomb explosions in
Nevada, aays hi staff Is better
prepared because of the extensive
educational program carried on by
his men with the logging industry.
The worst fire weather in 35
years occurred last year, and 125,
000 acres of state and private Um
ber lands were burned over. Of
this amount, 93 per cent of the
burning occurred on lands for
which logging operators sre re
sponsible. With that bitter memory behind
them, the state foreatry men held
23 meetings last spring with opera
tors, to teach them how fire pre
vention pays them dividends.
Spaur says the response was good,
and that 90 per cent of the opera
tor are cooperating.
Before a logging operator can go
to work, he has to get a permit
from the forester, these permits
are granted only after the opera
tor shows he has equipment to
fight fires. There have been 11,750
permits granted this year.

sion. He has three district super
visors under him. Then there are
32 enforcement officers and IS lo
cal wardens.

out. Everything is thrown into the
fight to quench the fire while its
small.
All fires are reported to the Sa
lem headquarters, which acts as
a general alaff. It dispatches
crews, as well aa supervisory per
sonnel. There are 32 crewa atatloned In
the forests, plus two state crews,
the 32 crews are hired by district
aasociatlons, which are coopera
tives run by the timber operators.
All timber operators, some of
whom have flrefighting organiza
tions of their own, pay assess
ment of up to 15 cents an acre
for fire protection. This amounts,
to one million dollars a year. Other
money for fire fighting Includes
$653,000 In federal funds, and 1350,
000 appropriated by the Legislature.
The atate Forestry Department
worxs closely witn the Federal
Forest Service.
Of the 1.000 persons on duty all
the time, SO0 are hired by the state
and 400 by the associations. But all
are considered state employes.
The state has 134 lookouts sta
tioned on lonely peaks. Some of
these are high school and college
students, and Walker says lft-year-old
girls make the best lookouts
because they are the most respon
