CHICAGO I Oregon's dele
gation at the Republican conven
tion continued Thursday to play
an active role.
Robert A. Elliott, chairman of
the Oregon ReDublican Central
Committee, was one of those sec
onding the nomination of Gen.
Dwight Eisenhower.
Ralph A. Cake, Oregon national
committeeman, represented the
Eisenhower forces in a meeting
with spokesmen for other candi
dates where it was agreed to post
pone the balloting until Friday.
Elliott in his seconding speech
told the delegates:
"To make ours again a national
party, we must make sure that is
a party of youth. As Ike has said,
youth is our future. We need their
votes; more than that we need
their enthusiasm, their courage
and. their vision."
Earlier in the day the Oregon
delegation split 9-9 on a proposal
to change convention rules. Most of
Oregon's leading politicians at the
convention opposed the rule change
which by reorganizing the na
tional committee wrests much con
trol from the Southern Slates.
The rules change was adopted by
the convention 683 to 913.
Opposing it were: Gov. Douglas
McKay, Salem; Sen. Wayne L.
Morse, Eugene; Stale Sen. William
E. Walsh, Coos Bay; Mrs. James
W. Mott, Salem: Carl Hogg,
Salem: State Sen. Howard C. Bel
ion, Canby; Gotdon Orput and
Shirle y A. Field, Portland, and
Mark Hatfield, Saicm.
Those approving the measure:
H. H. DeArmond, Bend; Al Pierce,
Coos Bay; H. W. Dent. The Dalles;
Frank Fowler, Astoria; J. O. John
son, Tigard; John Morgan and La
mar Tooze, Portland, and Robert
Elliott, Medford.
McKay said he opposed the
measure because he didn't think
it was "well thought through."
