A summer safety note has been
Interjected Into the scene already.
Rov Rowe report that yesterday
morning he spotted a youngster
optimistically fishing In the A
canal near the fool of Lincoln
street. Being a safety-minded clli
ren Koy suggested to the .oung
ster that he find a somewhat
safer place to fish, watched while
the Juvenile Ike Walton took off,
and went on his way with the
kindly glow that doing a Bood deed
leaves with one.
I suppose, of course, that the
Youngster privately thoucht Rov
was a fussy old maid. What, he
thought, could be the dancer of
fishing In anything so prosaic, so
ouiet. so peaceful as an Irritation
ditch?
Well, sonny, there are a few
hidden danger! that maybe you
didn't stop lo think of. - For
instance: til The banks all along
the canal are steep and slippery.
It's easy to lose your looting and
plunge in. But it's awfully hard io
rull yourself out. Your hands Veep
groping for a hold on something
but there just Isn't much to grab.
2t The whole canal is filled with
old rolls of wire. junk, bedsprings
and other assorted trash that
thoughtless people toss in to get
rid of. You fall in and get tangled
up Willi some of that wire 'and
you're drowned before you know it,
(31 The current is a lot swifter than
It looks. It can be treacherous. And
4i Don't forget that for a goodly
portion of the total distance the
canal is fairly remote from im
mediate dwellings. You holler for
help, i but it's highly likely you
wont be heard.
Nope, the canal Is a good place
. to stay away from. And in case
the adults think that warning Is
inly for children check back over
the records and you'll find five
adult drownings for every child
that has lost its life in the big
Ctch.
The holiday season has already

NEW YORK U" Some Amerl
can husbands, complaining that
matrimony has made them work,
threaten their wives darkly:
"But remember even a worm
can turn."
Other, more practical men, know
this is idle nonsense. What can a
worm do even if he does turn?
Nothing. There have been cases
of rabbits biting bulldogs, but who
ever heard of a worm busting a
robin in the beak?
A group of sensible husbands,
realizing a turning worm gets no
where but does thereby gam some
exercise, have banded together in
a kind of a Worm-oi-the-MonlO
Club.
The club, national in scope, is
called "the Worms Tumverein."
and its motto Is. "I am the master

tually. It Is the failure of the

k! the heart to hold back the blood.
wnicn causes a murmur.
It Is true, however, that there
are serious cau-.es for murmurs
which result from abnormality of
the heart valves, caused either by
disease or which were present at
birth. The valve deformities pres
ent at birth are fairly rare and
can usually be discovered aulte
early. Some can be corrected by
surgery.
Most or the valve troubles which
cause murmurs in youth are caused
bv rheumatic fever. Even this, how
ever, can be so mild that nothing
serious ever develops.
Rheumatic fever Injures the
heart valves by causing growths on
the lips or cusps of the valves so
that they cannot close completely. If
the damage to the heart valves
has been severe, the murmur may
mean that physical activity has to
be curtailed.
However, In manv cases the
growths are small and not active,
and even though they have pro
duced enough damage to cause a
murmur to be heard, the heart is
able to do Its Job without trouble.
An accurate rliagnosls of cause
and degree of damage should be
made. The mere presence of a
murmur in the heart is not enough,
nor does It always mean that or
dinary exercise has lo be elimin
ated, or that there will be serious
Interference with life or health.
