Alberta, from which Westcoast
Transmission Company proposes
to pipe gas into the Pacific North
weft, has natural gas reserves to
taling nearly two trillion cubic
feet, a Louisiana engineer testi
fied at a power commission hear
ing Tuesday.
W. C. Epooner of Shreveport, La.,
said the overall area contains
roughly 15,350,000 acres of which
10.600.000 are in Alberta and the
remainder In British Columbia.
Most of the area's proven re
serves, however, lie in British Col
umbia where, Spooner testified,
four fields have in excess of a
trillion cubic feet of gas. Thirteen
fields In Alberta have proven re
serves of 975 billion cubic feet.
Westcoast, one of five applicants
seeking commission authority to
serve Pacific Northwest markets,
has said it would meet more than
half its market demands from the
British Columbia fields where there
are so restrictions against export.
In addition, lt has limited auth
ority from Alberta to export 42
billion cubic feet yearly for a five
year period.
It does not. however, have per
mission of Dominion authorities.
Spooner's testimony was the first
offered by Westcoast as to the ex
tent of reserves in the Peace River
area.
Earlier the company had intro
duced letters of intent from var
ious producers in the area show
ing their willingness to negotiate
contracts to supply Westcoast.

from "unimpeachable sources"
that a Seattle man faked the pub
licum! false report that Owen Lat
timore was planning a trip to the
Iron Curtain country.
The FBI has determined the re
port was a fabrication, the Times
said. Earlier, however, as a result
of It. tile State Department ordered
customs officials not to permit the
Johns Hopkins University professor
to leave this country.
The Times said the Seattle man
was not identified, nor was his
motive known.
The newspaper quoted a federal
official connected with the case as
saying :
"God knows why he did It. He
had no idea that it would gel the
publicity it did."
It was learned, the Times said,
that the man gave the false In
formation to the Central Intelli
gence Agency headquarters here.
The information was eventually re
layed to the State Department.

House Okays
Humboldt Bill
WASHINGTON I The House
passed and sent to the Senate Tues
day a bill to authorize a 1406.500
project for deepening channels In
Humboldt Bay in Northern California.
The plan Includes dredging the
entrance channel to 40 feet, widen
ing it to 1.6O0 feet at the seaward
end. and deepening the channels
North Bay to Eureka and
Samoa.
The bill would provide no money.
