Every time we stop to think
about It we're baffled by the mag
nitude of the problem. What
1 problem? Why, that of this coun
try of ours here In the desert.
No matter where you turn you
find a line to step across. Either
a state line or a county line or a
territory line or a political division
lint
Actually the Klamath Basin is
made up of two slates and four
counties. Oregon and California
for the stales and Klamath. Lake.
Siskiyou and Modoc for the coun
ties. You might Include Humboldt
In the county list.
The resultant Jangle means that
we stand as an economic unit but
are spill as a political unit.
Our roads suddenly come to an
end as far as both construction
and maintenance are concerned,
our police powers are somewhat
limited by county lines not to speak
of the state muddle, and when it
comes to voting, we have to work
together to get men who can work
for the best good of the Basin
from the twin standpoints of both
California and Oregon.
There are times when I think
that the State Of Jefferson wasn't
such a bad idea.
All sorts of odd sights to see
along the Upper Lake road yester-

For one thing Monday night's
high winds tore loose a patch of
earth and tule that solidly
enough welded together to form
a floating Island. Last we saw of
It it was heading toward Algoma
with the intent of fusmg with
Hanks marsh probably.
Believe it or not pelicans proved
they are like people. Noticed two
of the big birds heading toward i
each other along the shore of the
lake and at about highwav level
In the air. So help me. they acted
just like people. First one veered
to let the other pass, and then that
one jerked over in the new lane
of traffic. Thev pulled that ma
neuver three times while I watched
and finally ended up by one going
over the too of the other one. Have
often been tempted to try that with
an illusive pedestrian myself.
Believe it or not there is some
enforcement to the side of the
flagman's duty. If you dont believe
it pick a scrap with the chap who
was guiding .traffic through the
north end of the construction job

bear chained to his truck. There's
a guy we're gonna obey.
Road work is still being pushed,
tut it will be some time before
the job is completed. When it is it
will certainly smooth out that long.

Seems like we remember a con
versation last winter when the snow
was deep, reported here at that

Esther Applegate when the weather
broke in the spring.
The enthusiasm was received
here with some skepticism, and we
raised the question of how strong
this enthusiasm would run when
time came to roll up your sleeves
and go to It.
This all refers, of course, to the
permanent Girl Scout and Camp
1re Girl summer camp at Lake
of the Woods. Heavy snows last
winter collapsed and wrecked the
recreation hall and all that was
stored in it, including furniture.

did helter-skelter damage totaling

the fine summer camp that it is.

ed lumber and materials, and we've
had a lot of other smaller dona-1
tions. George said, so everything !
is there at the camp ready for con-

The donations of building mater
ial has been wonderful, but we're
up against it for a lot of men to
help do the job. You can't holler
about it, George said a little rue
fully, because it's a straight volun
teer proposition but we'll never
get the recreation hall rebuilt and
me camp cleaned up Unless a lot
of men do volunteer to help.
A couple of the boats were stolen
and the rest weie crushed in the
building, he said. We're having
three boats built but we need three
more. One of the things the girls
will miss most will be the piano.
If somebody had an old piano that
they weren't using ...

nearest the sun. Mercury and Venus.
At present they are apparently In
a close huddle with old Sol. Mer
cury will be on the other side of
the iun from us, superior conjunc
tion, on Juue 8. Venus will be m

after that will be in the twilight
sky, setting after the sun. How
ever, it will not be far enough
from the sun to be easily seen for
