of State Acheson Tuesday urged
the Senate to give quick approval
plus a guarantee to help defend
Western Germany In the event
of Communist aggression.
The secretary told the Senate
Foreign Relations Committee:
"These agreements greatly ad
vance all that we have been trying
to do since the end of the war to
build a strength and unity among
the free nations."
As the administration's lead-of
witness in hearings on the pacts,
Acheson stressed the "great im
portance of early- ratification." He
said, too, he was confident other
Western European governments
would iollow suit if this were done.
It has been speculated widely
that France and possibly -other
North Atlantic Treaty Nations
would be cool to putting West Ger
many, a bitter enemy eight years
ao. in a mUitary alliance to which
France was a party.
The two documents which re
quire Senate approval are a peace
contract between the United States,
Britain. France and West Ger
many, and an amendment to the
North Atlantic Treaty granting
West Germany the guarantees of
the alliance.

When a record snow drift at
Lake o' the Woods collapsed the
camp's recreation building this past
winter, the camp piano, along with
ouier imngs was completely ruined.
A piano is a bie part of camp
life for the girls; the nightly song-
fests and regular religious services.
Somewhere in this area there
must be an old piano that's doing
no one any good and is taking up

G. Smyth, third of the scandal-
riddled Internal Revenue Bureau's
ousted collectors to be tried, was
acquitted of backdating his own
1945 income tax returns to defraud
the government.
Two other ousted collectors
Dennis W. Delaney of Boston and
James P Finnegan of St. Louis-
were convicted earlier this year.
A federal court jury of eight
women and lour men Monday
night freed Smyth alter deliberat
ing seven hours. They acquitted
him of three charges after be and
others testified his retums were
duplicates, filed to replace lost
originals.
