4-H Pheasant
Growing On
4-H'ers with hatching equipment
might plan lo go In the pheasant
business nt least for a couple of
months. The State Game Commis
sion will make 60 to 300 pheasant
eggs available to 4-H'ers. These
will be hatched and reared to 10
weeks of age and then released by
the District Game Agent. The
Game Commission will reimburse
raisers S1.O0 for each bird released.
It takes calm setting hens, a rear
Ing pen, setting nest, brood coop
and runway plus a feed board and
water fountain to raise pheasants.
The mimeograph "Directions for
Raising Chinese Pheasants by 4-H
Club Members" Is available.
Anyone Interested in this project
should contact the 4-H office for
further information.

the Agriculture Commissioner's of
fice that 3,4-D dust is being offered j
lor sale in me mieiaae nasm.
Farm Advisor Ken Baghott has an
nounced. The use of such material by com
mercial pest control operators is ;
unlawful in this area. Dust is far j
more difficult to keep under .con- I
trol than liquid spray and attempts J
to use herblcidal dust on grain ;
will unauestionablv result In a
great deal of drift damage being
done in potatoes, onions and other
susceptible crops.

Strawberry pickings Indicate
relatively heavy yields In most
areas, the Agriculture Depart
ment's crop-weather report said
Wednesday. The quality is good.
Labor is short.
The Umatilla County pea har
vest was expected to be in full
swing by next week.
At that time the cherry crop
should be moving to market in
unlimited quantities, the report
said.
Weather conditions were ideal
for the first hay crop harvest, with
good yields reported.
Winter wheat was well headed
out In early areas, but high winds
in the Columbia River Basin
caused some minor damage. Rain
would help.
Late seeding of spring Brains
Is continuing in Eastern Oregon
Counties.

Asks Release

Steamship Company has asked
that it be freed of liability for eight
million dollars in damage claims
of the freighter Pennsylvania.
The largest single claim against
the company has been filed by the
federal government. It asks
199,674 for cargo lost when the ship
disappeared Jan. 9 In a storm off
Vancouver, B. C.
Two insurance companies hava
filed claims totalling -one million
dollars. The Canadian government
is asaing 24.ooo and the families
of 39 of the ship's 46 missing crew
members have filed separata
claims Tinmnx from 12.000 to
S350.000.
The steamship line also has filed
a petition asking that liability be
iimitea in tne event the exonera
tes petition Is denied.

159; battle deaths 19,244; current
missing 9,690.

Electric storms knocked out elec
tric lines and the county auditors
