they are combined with canned
Washington-Oregon Bartlett Pears
you have a real treat in store.
Chill a can of pears ahead of time
to have them at their best when
they are served. ;

Still Planted
The gardener who Is planting
carnations or nursing along a pansy
bed or pruning a dogwood tree this
spring is working on the same sort
of plants his colonial ancestors
grew two and three hundred years
ago. This Is revealed by the book,
"Plants of Colonial Days: A Ouide
to 160 Flowers, Shrubs and Trees
In the Gardens of Colonial Williams
burg." Written bv botanist Ray
mond L. Taylor. "Plants of Colon
ial Days" has lust toeen published
by Colonial Williamsburg.
Dr. Tavlor lists the plants now
used as ornamentals In the gar
dens of the reconstructed colonial
city. These gardens were recreated
in their eighteenth century form
after painstaking research Into the
types of plants then used.
VARIETY
Although .today's gardener' has
many more varieties of plants to
choose from than his eighteenth
century forebears ne still cultivates
more than three-fourths of the co
lonial favorites Dr. Taylor de
scribes. The nasturtium, -he
French and African marigold, the
daffodils, hyacinths, lilacs, lilies of
the va lev. tiilins. magnolias and
snowballs that flourish outside of
twentlethlcentury homes are all di
rect descendants of plants that
grew In eighteenth century gardens.
Seeds or bulbs for many of the
plants were orlginallv brought here
bv colonists from England. Such
flowers as the blue Iris, calendula.
China aster, crocus and hollyhock
were tenderlv planted by the set
tlers In the new world as remind
ers of home. Other plants, such as
blue phlox, columbine, flame aial
ca. hnnev locust and hvdrangea
were native to this continent.
Onlv about thirtv of the plants
which Dr. Tavlor lists are no long
er usual''" cultivated outside of re
stored Williamsburg. Some of these
like trpes of roses, have been re
placed bv better varieties: some
have been killed off bv blights:
some have lust lost favor and been
permitted to die out.
