Apology Made
FLORENCE, Italy W The city
of Florence made public amends
Friday tor the hanging nd burn
ing of a Dominican monk whose
defiance threatened a schism in
the Roman Catholic church 434
years ago.
The fiery preacher. Girolamo
Savonarola, was excommunicated
by Pope Alexander VI. who later
said Savonarola should be included
among the saints.
Mayor Glrgio la Pira publicly
apologized Friday to St. Mark's
Monastery for the execution 'of Sa
vcnarcla and his two companions
on May 23. 1498.
For the first time since then. !
the Dominicans of St. Mark's were
again permitted to enter the chao-

which they had been barred by i
I the powerful Medici family that
had been opposed by Savonarola.
) It was in this chapel that the, re-
ion before being tortured and
forced to say be was not a prophet.
Students of Florence scattered
white flowers on the spot where
the famous Dominican, who led a
crusade against luxury and for hu
mility, was burned.
