Br JIM COI R
PORTLAND, Or. Ifl Harry
. (Kid) MatUiewi cleared his first
major heavyweight hurdle here
Monday nlgtit. Matthews, 183 4,
Seattle, looked impressive In punch-
- lng out a 10 round decision over
Rex Layne, 198 ifc, Lewlston, Utah.
Layne waa the first heavyweight
of reputation that Matthews had
met.
His manager, Jack Hurley, said
after the fight lie hoped to sign
Matthews for a match sometime
In July with Rocky Marclano, the
. Brockton, Mass., belter who knock
ed out Joe Louis.
Matthews was Just too classy
and hit too hard for Layne, a prim
itive type mauler who neverthe
less holds a decision over heavy
weight champion Joe Walcott.
KNOCKDOWN
The sharp-hitting Seattle veter
an scored the only knockdown of
the fight In the second round. He
set the rugged Layne up with body
punches to land his favorite left
and right combination to the head.
The right floored Layne for an
eight count. The big fellow was
groggy when he got up but was
able to weather another Matthews
flurry until the bell.
Matthews bad his foe In trouble
several times again before the end
but was content to box and counter-punch
without rushing In for
the kill. He apparently developed
at healthy respect for Layne's
punching power to the first round
when the Utah man twice stag
gered him with lefts to the head.
MISTAKES
Hurley expressed satisfaction
with Matthews' showing. "He beat
a big, strong, good boy." Hurley
said. "Of course he still made a
lot of mistakes, and I thought he
it I.avne Bet away a couple of
times when he had him set up for
the knockout But we're sstisfied
and think we'd give a good ac
count of ourselves with Marciano."
A crowd of 11,000. the largest In
Oregon boxing history, paid nearly
(73,000 a record gate in the state,
to see the fight.
