Doty to be a member ol the Fed
eral Power Commission.
Doty was named by President
Truman three months uko to fill the
unexpired term of Mon Wallpren.
who resigned. The term runs until
June 23, 1954.
At a hearum before the com
mittee acted, Doty said he is not
committed to public power in pref
erence to private power develop
ments. Where the two Interests are in
conflict, he said the issue should
be determined on the basis of the
greatest (tain in the public Interests
and "what use of the resource Is
going to give us the greatest
mount of power."
Sen. Magiiuson iD.-Wash.i. asked
Doty whether support for his nom
ination from sportsmen's groups in
the Pacific Northwest indicated a
disposition to favor fish preserva
tion over hydro-electric powere de
velopment. "I have no inclination to be for
fish to the detriment of powex,"
Doty replied.
He added that he has worked
for a program to brin? fish and
power into balance throughthe in
stallation of fish protection devices
along with power dams.

of this city last ninnt.
Investigating police found a
crater three feet wide and three
feet deep on the lnotball practice
field behind McArthur Court on
the University of Oregon campus.
They checked the possibility that
the blast had been set off as a
student prank.
Police said the Coast Cable Co.
reported that 25 pounds of stumD
blasting powder had been stolen
Saturday night.
The explosion brought a flood of
telephone calls to the police de
partment switchboard. No serious
damage was reported.
