Swiss Women to Decide
On Future of Suffrage
By MICHAEL GOLDSMITH
AP Newsrcalurva
OENEVA Swiss women will (TO
to the polls (or the first time la
history here thu year in refer
endum to help decide whether they
want to voto in the future.
The referendum will be confined
to the ronton of Ornev and will
hove only a "consultative ' charac
ter. Whatever the women want, the
Inst word will remain with the
men.
Swilserland Is among the last
countries in Europe where women
are Mill denied the rote. All nation
al, cantonal and local elections
itre f onflned to men and onlv men
can become members of the na
tional and cantonul parliaments
nnd the local councils. A lame
body of public opinion Is m favor
ot extending the rielit to vote to
women, but under the constitutor!
such an innovation must be ap
proved by referendum.
Many Swiss cantons have held
a referendum on mis issue In re
cent years, but women's auffrnRe
has Invariably been relectrd. Only
the men voted. Less than a year
aso. Uie canton of Vnnd. which
contains Lausanne, produced a 60
per cent mnjoniy against a law
permitting local district to Brunt
women the vote on purely local
Issues.
One of the ma lor props of the
anti-feminist platform in all these
cnmpalmu has been the sloitnn,
"Women don't want to vote." Since
Women have never voted In Swtt
serlaud, no one was able to
prove or disprove this statement.
Mil Inly In the hope of disproving
It, the pro-lcmlntst members of
the cantonal parliament of Geneva
carried by 81 voles to 36 recently
a proposal to hold a "consultative"
referendum among the women of
Geneva.
