JOAN PLEADS WITH FORMER HUSBAND Actress Joan
Fontaine follows her former husband, William Dozier,
' television producer, down the courtroom corridor at Santa
Monica, Calif., and pleads with him. Dozier had previously
obtained a restraining order to prevent Miss Fontaine
from taking their 3-year-old daughter, Deborah, with her
on a motion-picture-taking trip to Spain. Miss Fontaine
was attempting to have the order set aside.

the intermountain region.
Generally, damage was confined
to flooded farmlands and disrupted
communications. But in Salt Lake
City and some other communities
many basements vere filled with
water as the runoff overtaxed
storm sewers.
The flood water here was from
six creeks, carrying melting snow
from the Wasatch Mountains that
rise abruptly from the city's east
ern edge.
In Idaho, most serious flooding
has centered along U.S. Highway
83. north from Twin Falls. The
route serves Idaho's Sun Valley re
sort and the branch Union Pacific
Railroad line leading from Sho
shone to the Sun Valley station at
Ketchum has been undermined at
some places. Temporary supports
have been placed under the tracks,

pal stream, was near flood stage
much of its length. I was expected
to begin overflowing In the Welser
area by Sunday.

Problem of 'Snow Mold'

ers and harassed husbands may all
give thanks for a research project
underway at Washington Slate Col
lege.
Every golfer or lawn tender who
has discovered straw-colored patch
es of grass on their favorite rec
reation spots or larmrrs wno have
found dead winter wheat will be
interested to know what the col
lege's test-tube men have found out
about these blemishes caused by
snow mold.
The unsightly area caused by the
mold are a menace to Hie golfer's
score, a threat to the farmer and
a challenge to WSC research men.

Pathologist Jack P. Meiners, who
ran chemical tests last winter.
Meiners says the organisms caus
ing the snow mold live deep In the
soil and only cause the disease
when conditions are right.
The snow mold fungus destroys
the blades of grass and sometimes
even kills Uie crown (where the
blade Joins the root).
The mold is also a threat to
winter wheat, olien forcing farm
ers to reseed after It has struck.

Meincra found that two of the
commercial chemicals tested gave

no control in Pullman. Other test

been able to find the best con
centration solution for the two most
effective chemicals.
