Study Slated
REEDSPORT m A studv be
gan here Thursday of ways to end
dangerous tides and currents in
Winchester Bay. where 11 sports
iisnermen drowned last year.
The Port of Umpqua and the
Douglas County Court hired an en
gineering firm to make the study.
mere are two objectives: (D. to
end present hazards and (2i to
outline future recreational devel
opments.
Local residents have blamed the
south Jetty lor much of the trouble.
The jetty was built two years ago,
intended to maintain the cargo
shipping channel.
Residents insist the Jetty set up
swift currents and channeled a
ground swell into the bay.. They
blame this for a current eating
away a bank on the north end of
ithe bay, threatening homes there.
County-owned land, intended as a
beach boulevarcl, was washed
away. Boat landings also have
been damaged.
