THE BUJEBIRD OF HAPPINESS was perching on the shoulder of pretty Gertrude Val
lcjos, just nrrived from her home in Manila when the staff photographer caught her
in his lens this week. She had just arrived by air for a short visit with her brothers,
Tony, long-time employe of the Willard hotel and Ariston Vallejos.
It is with their cooperation that she will continue her studies in home economics
at the University of Idaho in preparation for her return to her homeland and her teach
ing profession.
Gertrudo graduate of the Philippine Women's College, has her Bachelor's De
gree In homo economics. She taught for 10 years prior to World War II and from 1947
to 1950 following the liberation of the Philippines, was a nutritionist with the U.S. Public
Health Service, visiting by air, families in far distant parts of the Islands, teaching
health and sanitation.
She arrived In time to see a new snow fall for the first time in her life . . was as
tonished at tho graciousncss of the folks she was meeting in America .
Her trip across was sparked with the companionship of other young women from
Manila, flying to join service-men husbands here . . it left her with pleasant memories of
feminine chit-chat.
Two years from now she will be flying back home with a fund of new-found informa
tion and we hope, a bond of friendship her land and ours that will last forever.

MERRILL Mrs. James Shuck
and Mrs. Mervyn Shuck were the
hostesses for the January 31 meet
ing of the Merrill Library Bridge
club. They entertained at the Clif
ford Shuck home with a 1:30 des
sert bridge.
Four tables were In play, and
high score went to Mrs. W. J.
Orove, low score lo Mri. Jnmei
Hammond.
On Thursday February II, Mra.
Tom Chatburn Sr. will entertain
the group at her home for a 1:30
dessert. Mrs. W. J. Orove will be
the co-hostess.

clothes for Koreans Is to be con
