Armed Services Committee Tues
day got a hush-hush report from
Secretary of State Acheson on why
the United States decided to pav
Hungary 1120,000 for the release of
four American fliers.
.. The committee heard Acheson
j -behind closed doors. Sen. Lyndon
Johnson. D-Tex., the acting chair
man, said afterwards the members
would "no doubt give consideration
r to the Information provided."
Johnson added that the commit
tee had decided not to make public
any of that information at this
time.
"We got from Acheson his story
. of what happened and a somewhat
detailed report of each move bv
the State Department leading to
me release 01 tnese men, ' John
son told reporters.
Another member who asked not
to be named described the situa
tion as "delicate" and said pub
licity could have a harmful ef
fect. In reply to questions, he said
there had been some discussion
of what might happen if a similar
case were to develop in the lu
lure.
In advance of Tuesday's meet
Ing of the committee. Sen. Morse
R-Ore., a member, said he wanted
to ask Acheson about the reasons
for the decision to pay and what
alternatives were considered.

honey D-Wyo said Tuesday that
top Pentagon leaders-are gambling
that Soviet Russia will not touch
off another world war "until 1954
or 195S."
"I want to be more certain that
meanwhile we have a defense pro
gram that allows us to keep up with
the Russians in air power," O'Ma
honey told reporter.
He offered these comments as he
asked Secretary ot Defense Lovett
and the Army, Navy and Air Force
Secretaries to return for a second
day of public testimony on the
S2. 100.000.000 military budget for
the next fiscal year starting July 1.
O'Mahoney is chairman of the
Appropriations subcommittee han
dling the huge spending bill,
Lovett made it plain Monday that
the multi-billion dollar defense pro
gram is far short of - the totaiu
asked by the military chiefs.
He also testified that- original
goals for production of aircraft,
tanks and other military "hard
goods' had been cut back sharply.
The secretary said that in pre
paring "against the dangers ot a
hot war, we must not be trapped
by our own efforts into losing the
cold one.'
"We have tried to eliminate the
fat as far as possible," he said. "I
am fearful that we have cut Into
the muscle in some places."
O'Mahoney said the gamble that
Russia does not plan an immediate
war was evident in LoveU's testi
money about production of aircraft
for the Air Force and Navy.
The senator said the present
schedule calls for deliveries
through 1954 and into 1955.
