Actor Has Tough
Time With Cops
PORTLAND I When a rough'
ly dressed man walked Into the po
lice station carrying a Bible,
whip and a revolver, police on duty
grew uneasy.,
When he demanded that they
give him an automobile, they be
came downright balky.
In the end, he got the automo
bile, though. The intruder was E.
W. Thompson, who finally con
vinced them that he was an actor
at the Portland Civic Theater and
was caught with only his costume
to wear when they impounded his
car because he parked it in the
wrong place.
Sugar Beet
Aid Asked
WEIfiER. Idaho W An anneal
has been made to President Tru
man for federal aid for Idaho and
Eastern Oregon sugar beet growers
wnose crops sun are unnarvested.
State Sen. Clark Hamilton wrote
the President asking If a federal
agency could loan beet growers up
to t2.40 a ton, the subsidy price,
for beets remaining in the ground.
Hamilton said the loan would
cost less than 1200,000, but would
enable many farmers to continue
operations o-i a small scale until
their 1952 crop could be harvested.
Hamilton said about 3.500 acres
of beets are unhsrvested because
a short labor supply was unable
to dig the beets before the ground
was frozen solid.
He estimated the loss to farmers
at nearly a million dollars.
