WASHINGTON Ml House lead

per cent pay raise next week ran
Into a snag; Friday.
"Poor timing." was blamed.
Influential House members re
ported stiff opposition to docketing

They predicted defeat of the bill
if It comes up so early,
The estimated cost of the bill Is
800 million dollars annually. As ap
proved unanimously by the House
Armed Services Committee, it
would give everyone In the Armed

Current opposition to the measure
reportedly is not oased on its mer

Truman Gives
Appoint Committee For
C eanup of Administration
By ARTHUR EDSON
WASHINGTON m President
Truman said Thursday If General
Elsenhower wants to run for Presi
dent and be the tarzet for m"l
and rotten eggs It's ell right with
him.
But when he was asked If he
would support Elsenhower. Mr.
Truman said he doesn't think the
country would prosper under any
Republican candidate.
Mr. Truman stressed at his news
conference what he has said many
times before: He has a big onln
ion of Eisenhower, and he likes
him, and he wants him to stay on
as the top commander of United
Military Forces In Europe.
He s doing a good lob. Mr. Tru
man said.
And. he said. EIenhower wll !
stay on the job until he himself
asks to be relieved. If Elsenhower
should receive the Republican
Presidential nomination, Mr. Tru
man said, of course he will have to
resign his position.
in other highlights of his weekly
meeting with newsmen. Mr. Tru
man said:
1. He has given up the idea of a
special commission to ferret out
wrong-aoings in ine government. :
Attorney General J. Howard Mc-'
Grath, as the government's chief
law enforcement officer, will carry
out the Job. He said McOraUt will
remain in the Cabinet.
2. He has named a committee to
see that firms with government
contracts do not discriminate In
hiring workers. The contracts car
ry a clause lormoaing Discrimina
tion. Heading the committee on
compliance is Dwight R. G. Palm
er, chairman ot the board of the
General Cable Corporation.
Most of tne news conlerence was
given over to exchanges revolving
about Eisenhower's statement Mon
day that (A) he Is a Republican:
(B) would accept a "clear call"
from the GOP to be Its Presidential
nominee, but (C) will not engage
In pre-conventlon activities and will
not ask to be relieved of his pres
ent military assignment.
In the course of a bantering se
ries of questions. Mr. Truman re.
peated what he has said before
tnat sen. Kooeri a. rait oi unio is
the man he hopes the Republicans
win nominate.
The President refused to say
wnetner ne intends to run again,
but he made It plain he would not
hestltate to run against Elsenhower

He said he had been told that

It was not until Elsenhower aald
