have been set up, with Santa's
helpers (the Jaycees) standing by
in case Santa himself becomes too

Ruling Might Put Damper

A ruling by the U.S. bureau of
land management's Portland re
gional office made a lew days ago
might throw a fnmily-slte monkey
wrench into the plans of a good
many persons who have staked out
mining claims ou forest service
land.
The ruling declared null and void
43 claims of 160 acres each in
limberlanrisv near Handle, Wash.,
on grounds the locations were not
properly made and that the neces
sary annual assessment work was
not done.
The claims near Randle were
made ostensibly on a thin layer
of pumice, but the land Involved
in the 7160 acres is a part of the
Cifford Plnchot national forest.
Roscoe E. Bell, land manage
ment bureau regional administra
tor who announced the veto on the
43 claims, said adverse proceed
ings would be started against 73
more claims in the same area.
Claim-staking on the GiCord
Plnchot forest has been paralleled
by claim-staking on the Rogue Riv
er and Deschutes national forests
in Southern and Central Oregon,
and perhaps not quite so extensive
as It has been down here.
The latest count In this vicinity
showed about 38.000 acres ol Des
chutes forest land and up to 80.000
acres of Rogue River forest land
under mining claims, most of them
tiled in the past two years.

ness but a youthful 31 years old.

Mining Claims
to abound In the norUiern portion

being worked commercially by at
least one concern.
But the real object of all the
I mining activity may be. although
.no one has llatfoplcdly said so,
, the timber on the land.
I The federal mining law. enacted
; in 1873, allows placer claims on
unreserved public lands for all mln
I erals not occurring In lode or vein
formation. The deilmtlon of "mln-
erul Is extremely vague. It covers
whatever Li considered a mineral
I "by the standard authorities." The
' law allows one-man 20-acre claims,
lor eight-man 160-acre association
' claims, without limit as to how
many claims the "association" of
I eight persons may take up.
The filing fee Is but tl. and an
nual assessment work has to be
only a hundred dollars worth. It
'doesn't take much work to amount
) to that much.
Claims on the Olfford Plnchot.
Rogue River and Deschutes forests
have been made under provisions
of this law, and If the claims are
eventually proven up In accordance
with law the land and everything
on It becomes property of the miner
SIMPLE TO DO
But even before the claims are
proved. Just the act of staking and
filing lies up the property so that
nothing can be done on It without
the claimant's permission. The tim
ber can't be cut by the claimant,
but neither can It be put up for
sale by the forest service.
Last fall the Deschutes forest had
a small fire (25 acres! and to get
clearance to salvage the fire-damaged
timber the service had to get
the permission of 14 different own
ers to 17 different mining claims
Gone 15 Years
20 years ago, you'll remember her
pert face and sprightly acting in
many a picture.
Having been an ardent fan In
that vintage, I can readily recall
her Becky Thatcher opposite
Jackie Coogan's Tom Sawyer. I
can also recall when she cavorted
with Wheeler and Woolsey In "Girl
Crazy," In which she used a cookie
for a monocle and Imitated Oeorge
Arllss. Therefore it was a bit ol
a shock to find that she Is now
grown up and the mother of three
children.
Mltzl Is currently acting as one
of the foils for Abbott and Cos
tello In another of their far-flung
epics, "Lost In Alaska." It was a
good choice for her return, since
the impromptu nature of Abbott
and Costello pictures would pre
clude any nervousness on her part.
"Naturally, I felt a little Jumpy
about doing a picture alter IS
years away," she remarked.
"When I arrived on the set, Jean
Yarbrough, the director, suggested
that I run through the scene. I
went through It breezily, but 1
thought I heard a noise, like a
camera running. When I got
through, Jean said 'cut.' I had
done my first scene and didn't
know 11."
JSInce then she's been getting
along swimmingly, and now she's
eager to do more pictures.
Mltzl came by her talent natu
rally, being the daughter of a
vaudeville team. At four, she was
entertaining people backstage with
her Impressions of Moran and
Mack, and it wasn't long before
she was doing her stuff onstage.
She got her break in pictures in
1929, at the age of eight.
"Actually, I was only In pictures
three or four years," she re
marked. "I came back In 1936 to
do my last picture, "Transatlantic
Merry-Go-Round," which was Jack
Benny's first film."
After that, she returned to the
stage, scoring hits In Broadway
shows, in vaudeville and lately as
a night club star. She la doing
most of her old Imitations, and
she still has many fans who call
for the George Arllss routine.
Unlike many former child stars,
Mltzl appears to have found a sue
cussful married life. She Is the
wife of Joseph Pevney, Broadway
actor and now a film director at
Universal International studios.
They have three children: Joel, 7,
Jan, 4, and Jeff, 8 months.

Trail Of Dewey

slaughter by abortion.
District Attorney John B. Mc
Court said yesterday Dewey would
have to face trial on a charge of
maintaining a public nuisance.
Maximum penalty Is 1500 fine and
six months In Jail.
McCourt said four clinic attend
ants, indicted Jointly with Dewey,
also would face trial on the public
nuisance charge. The four will face
trial on the manslaughter by abor
tion charge later, he said. .
CAR DEATH
PORTLAND, (VP) Ah 81 -year-old
Portland manSvas killed last night
when struck by a car during a
driving rain. He was Ernst M. Has
enmayer. Police said he was cross
ing the street holding an umbrella
to shield his face when struck. The
driver was not cited.
