Christmas Bonus
Goes On Table
WASHINOTON. lTh national
labor relations board haa ruled
that where a Chrlatmaa bonus haa
been paid remilarly. an employer
moy not reduce It without taking
the matter up with the union.
Board member Abe Murdock,
dissenting in the 3-1 decision, con
tended "a genuine Christmas gift
has no nlsce on the bargaining
'nble.N But the majority held that
"the Christmas spirit . , , does
not stop short of the bargaining
table, for bargaining in good faith
is In Itself a continuing elfort to
achieve goodwill between an em
ployer and his employes."
Specifically, the NLRB upheld a
complaint by a local of the CIO
united auto workers against the
Nlles-Bemont-Pond Co. of West
Hartford. Conn. In cutting bonuses,
the firm said it did so because
It had increased pension fund pay
ments. The NLRB majority held
that since the company had made
varying Christmas bonus payments
to its workers for a dozen years,
the bonus was really a part of the
workers' wages and so was subject
to bargaining.
