An elderly woman r.llh a cul
tured southern accent went to the
travelers aid desk In the union sta
tion here and asked (or directions
to Savannah's best hotel. She ap
parently had arrived on a train
from the north.
She wore an Inexpensive black
coat and hat. and her cotton stock
ings were twisted.
The travelers aid suggested a
less expensive hotel, but the wom
an Insisted on the best.
"I mleht spend the winter In
Savannah." she said.
Soon afterwards she registered
at one of Savannah's leading ho
tels. The name she gave was Amel
ia Samors: her address. Shelton.
Mas'. Her only luggage was a
small black bng. Before she went
to her room she deoosltled a little
more than S10O with the clerk.
A day passed.
Monday afternoon her body was
found In her room. There was a
brief note nearby:

which I have will pay the hotel
bin and the funeral expenses.
Dr. Harold Smith, coroner for
Chatham county, said last , night
the death was a suicide. An over
dose of sedatives, perhaps.
