Her odd cravlnn is explained by
her profession. She's an odor con

profound interest In all things

Most of her work Involves mer

purely scientific. She'd like to find

"I finally located a skunk that

Her passion tor odors dates from
her childhood In Palestine Tex.
She read all she could about them,
collected all kinds of fragrant ob

of smell.
"I practically drove my father
crasv," she recalls. "I'd have a
whole collection of things In the
house, and the place was always
smelling of one thine or another."
She came to New York when she
was n, worked as a salesgirl and
secretary and established a secre
tarial service which went broke.
She turned back to odors, and now.
at 33. is a full-time odor
consultant.
As such, she solves smell-problems
for business firms. A man
ufacturer of a new snack-type food
was puirled. His product had no
smell whatever. Miss Allen pro
duced a nice scrnt which was
mixed with the Ink on the label.
Now it smells fine and people buy
It.
HAY. HEY!
A miniaiure golf course had no
customers, because the place was
located between a dump and a
swamp which had to be sprayed
for mosquitos. Miss Allen added a
new-mown hay smell to the mos
quito soray, and that killed the
dump odor. Customers not only
crowd the place, but they olten
ltko the smell so much they say,
Sprav me with It!"
An electric manufacturing com

of human smell. The plant was

PORTLAND, Ltl Continued re

urged hero today by the chief of
the federal bureau of entomology
and plant quarantine "to assure
safety of the valuable forest re
source from needless destruction
by pests."
Avery S. Hoyt. the bureau chief,
In a speech prepared for delivery
to the western forestry and conser

pointed to spruce budworm spray
ing In the northwest as evidence
of progress In forest insect control
efforts.
More tlian 3,000.000 acres have
been sprayed by plane In the past
three years, he said.
Hoy; said spraying, combined
with frecilug temperatures and
woodpeckers, appear to have "bro

Thornton T. Munger, former di
rector of the Pacific Northwest for
est and range experiment station,
discussed forest slash burning. He
told the 600 delegates Irom 11 west
em slates and British Columbia
that no blanket rule on burning
could be laid down. The question Is
one which the forest manager must
decide, he added.
Good market conditions for lum.

resulted in an incentive to grow
trees as future crops. Ernest L.
Kolbe, chief forester of the Western
Pine association, said yesterday.
He praised the tree farm program
but urged better planning In har
vesting mature tree crops. Some
15 to 3J percent of mature trees
are over-ripe and are subject to
Insect Infestation, he said. He urged
increased cutting In uch standi.
Kolbe reported that- recent aerial
surveys reveal there are about S0.
