Billie Burke, Now in Video,
Defends the Low-Cut Gowns

HOLLYWOOD, P Billle Burke,
now a lull-time television star, to
day defended the call who wear
low-cut gowns on TV.
"My goodness,' exclaimed the
distinguished actresa, "Isn't the
aecret o( beauty In how to reveal
and how to conceal? If a girl has
something worth revealing, I don't
see why ah shouldn't do so, as
long as she leaves something to
the imagination.
''After all, there Is considerable
historical basis for the use of decol
letage. In the 17th and 18th cen
tury, the ladles certainly went In
for plunging necklines, both on the
stage and off. Lillian Russell was
slightly before my time in the the
ater, but I can recall seeing her
with wry low-cut gowns. She wss
typical of that era. The women
may have worn plenty of skirts,
but they were certainly skimpy
sbove."

Miss Burke also cited her late
husband, the great showman Flor
ens Zlegfeld.
"Mr. Ziegfeld certainly knew the
value of revealing the female fig
ure," she remarked, "although I
must say that as his career pro
gressed the girls in his shows wore
more than they did in his earlier
days."
I talked to Miss Burke at her
television show, where the techni
cians were klddingly cslling her
"Faye Emerson." It seems she
had worn a fairly low-cut dress
thst day "quite by mistake." She
primly applied a covering of lace
before air time.

cludes her return to the stage or
screen. She does a hall-hour, five-limes-a-week

ment show over KTTV. She arrives
at the station around 11 in the
morning and works straight
through until the show Is off Uie
air at 4:30. I asked how she de
cided on such heavy work.
"I had done some guest appear
ances in ivew xort," sue said,
"but that didn't seem to be the
thing for me. At first I Uiouuht
I might do a program of my rem
iniscences, but I realised that can
be deadly. So we came up with
the idea of Just u ovine mvself
at home and having guests to Inter
view,
"I must admit I was terrified
at first. I was completely at a
loss on the first show and had
the frightening feeling of "what am
I doing nere?' I mint mcxt actors
are out of their element when they
are reauired to soenk bv them
selves, after having relied all their
lives on lines that were written
for them. Why, when I started out
on the stage, my producer would
not even allow me to speak at
luncheons snd he tried to keep
nie from talking to the press.
"But after the first few TV pro
grams, I began to enjoy It and
now it's fairly easy work. And the
reception I get from the people
who write in makes it well worth
Uie effort. '
Miss Uurke's schedule eliminates
any movie or stage activity. I
a-ked It slio regretted this.
"No," she replied, "before I
started doing TV, I waa luckv to
be In two charming pictures. 'Kalh
er of Uie Bride' and 'Father's Utile
Dividend.' And I have tried some
plays In Uie past few years with-
out much success. I even did one
at the Pasadena Playhouse while
i was on TV, but II didn't work
out. I think you have to live In
New York and devote all your
time to Die stage in order to find
what you want."

Go To Salem
SALEM, The stste bosrd ot
control told the Oregon historical
society to itive the state back some
15,000 precious records o( Oreiton's
, provisions! and territorial govern
uienis.
These records, trains back before
1SS when Oreitou became a stale.
were loaned to the society In 1931
because Uie state didn't have
saie place to keep them. It wss
a Rood thing, loo, because Uie cap-
noi ourned in 1335. and the rec
ords would have been destroyed.
But now that the stste has tire
proof vsults In the new stste build
ings in Salem. Uie board of control
thinks Uie recor.ds should be kept
here.
Board members said tht records
now are belli kept In the second
floor of the public auditorium in
Portland. They ssld the qusrters
are not fireproof, snd that Uie pub
lic doesn't have any access to Uie
records.
The board will place them In
a fireproof vault In the capltol.
where they will be readily avail
able to persons who need to refer
to them.
The board hopes eventually to
find a place where the most In
teresting records can' be put on
public display.
The request to return the records
to Salem wns made by Brian Good
enough, Salem attorney who worked
for the state supreme court for
25 years ss bsllllf snd code com
missioner. Ooodenough said that on many
occasions, tie had need to refer
to the records, but he couldn't get
them becsuse they were In Port

To Appear In
Basin Towns
Hundreds of Klamath basin chil
dren who went home disappointed
when organizers of the recent
Christmas parade let Santa Claus
off the hook, will have a chance
to see the old gent and his will
lug helper Merry Christmas In
series of personal appearances ar
ranged for the sixth straight year
by J. W. Kerns Jr.
Santa Claus, without Merry
Christmas, will be at Uie J. W.
Kerns Implements store Friday
and Saturday, 1:30 to 430 p.m.,
also the following weekend, before
starting his outside Itinerary, with
Merry Christmas, Dec. 11.
On that day, Santa Claus and
Merry Christmas will appear at
Uie Tulelske American Legion hall
at 8 p.m., following the Legion's
6:30 potluck.

AWARDS
Many awards were presented to
4-H members Tuesday night, No
vember 6 at the Fort Klamath
grange hall by Margaret Brundage
Klamath County 4-H Club Agent.
Certificates of achievement were
given the "Sew So Simple" club
of Fort Klamath and tho "Agency
Lake Sheep Club," for having all
Its members complete their club
work this past year. 4-H members
completing from one to six years
of club work were awarded cards
or 4-H pins. Ribbons for state and
county fairs went to many. Schol
arships also were awarded to
champion and blue ribbon winners.

"Agency Lake BheeD Club." lead
by Leroy Ericsson of Agency lake,
to Fort Klamath 4-H members, to
Sew So SlmDle" club led bv Mrs.
R. S. Loosley and Mrs. Fred Pope,
to the "Chlloquln Knitting Club,"
led by Mrs. Harry Ravlzza. and
to Janna Warren of Algoma.
The achievement program In
cluded club songs, yells, demon
strations, nlano and accordion so
los, humorous Tradings, and piny
on how to organize a 4-H club.
Mrs. R. S. Loosley of Fort Klam
ath was In charge of the program
and refreshments.
