SILVERWARE AS A PRESENT is always proper, whether at Christmas or any other oc
casion for lavish giving, and it is the 6ns present which can be used constantly without
losing its value to the owner. Shirley Slowey, of Rickys, shows off this attractive set.
Old Legend
Tells of
Charity Test
Christmas is coming,
the geese are getting fat.
Please put a penny
in the old man's bat
II you haven't got a penny,
- a ha'penny will do
11 you haven't got a ha'penny,
Lien Cod Bless You!
The above is a beggar's rhyme j
from Old England. It started with '
the ancient custom of giving alms
at Christmas time. :
The origin of this goes back to i
the belief that the Christ came to i
earth in various disguises in search j
of those who were kind and de
serving, during the holiday sea
son. It was feared that He might
be unrecognized and ignored.
An old legend tells of the Christ
Child going from door to door on
Christmas Eve in his search ofi
good Christians. His test was to
plead for aid, and He was often !
turned away.
This story led to giving- alms '
on Christmas Eve, and beggars
were thus seldom refused. I

Silver, though lovely, needn't be
costly. If it's fine sterling-Inlaid

wear well, for many years.
A versatile gravy boat and tray
with matching servers, for instance
makes a silver gift that's smart
ly coordinated and yet budget
priced. The gravy boat can hold
sauce as well as gravy.
For another gift that will make j
a aazznng appearance for a pit
tance, you might try tying a dozen
after-dinner coffee spoons to the
branches of a miniature spruce
tree with bits of red ribbon.
This, by the way. makes a gift
that's good for the career girl, the
young married couple, or tne old
er married coupie. ,
In fact. It's a gift ideal for prac
tically anyone but a small child.
And children have their own sli
ver gifts. One set is made up of
liny fork and spoon set into
siois in uie wings of a orignuy-'
colored small plastic duck. Fork 1
and spoon are designed for good
balance and easy use bv small i
hands. Both come in patterns to .
