new police chief, on a trial basis,
is expected to be made sometime
this week. Mayor Frank Trotman
said today.
Since the discharge of Chief
Floyd Walther several days ago,
Ex-Police. Chief Max Hartlerode
has been acting chief.
Walther was let out following a
Tulelake tavern melee which re
sulted in the chief's being Jailed
and fined for disorderly conduct.
Hartlerode, beginning In the
early 20's, served as chief for 12
years. He was also constable dur
ing four years of his term.
Mayor Trotman said some five
or six persons had applied for the
job. Hartlerode saia ne wouia noi

In Accident
City bus driver Ernest Busse;.',
cited following a Saturday eve
nlnir bus-car collision that hosol'
talued one man, was absolved of
blame hi a city police court
hearing late this morning.
The accident occurred when the
city bus was hit head-on by a
car at 8. 8th and Shasta way a
lew minutes after seven Saturday
evening.
A passenger in the car. Ell
Aaland, 63, Los Angeles, sulfered
a deeo cut over his left eye. At
the hospital today his condition
was reported as good.
The collision occurred as Ihe
bus was turning from S. 6th Into
Shasta way. Bus driver Bussey
ssld he had already cut across
the left traffic lanes when he
noticed Ihe csr traveling toward
the city was apparently not going
to stop. He said he stopped the
bus and the car crashed into the
front of the bus.
The car was driven by Bill
Haynes. 32, Tulelake. son-in-law
of the Injured man. Aaland.
Havnes was shaken up and
bruised. The bus company said no
passengers were injured.

failure to yield right-of-way. But
this morning. Municipal Judge
Robert Elder found the bus driv
er not guilty.
A second citation grew out of

after Simon's car struck a pickup
at E. Main and Home. The pick
up was driven by Clarence C.
Baelby, 2154 Eberleln. Police said
Simon's car was on the wrong
side of the street when the col
lision occurred.
In police court this morning,
Simon pleaded not guilty and re
quested a Jury trial.

the crest of a bill, and driving

fresh vehicle.
He Is defended by attorney U.
