The three-day Southern gover
nors conference was non-pnlitictil
in Its purposes. But It spotlighted
the rift between leaders ot the
States' Rights Democrat and
those who suppor Pres. Iruman
and his administration.
One thing appeared certain In
the aftermath of the conference:
political peace In the South can be
achieved only by a compromise,
citlier on the Democratic party
platform or the parly's presidential
candidate.
UNACCEPTABLE
States' Rights leaders made tt
clear they will not accept Mr. Tru
man as the Democratic standard
bearer In 193. They equally were
emphatic that the price of party
peace must include elimination of
the civil rights issue lrom the par
ty platform.
On the other side, the pro-Tru
man forces displaced a willingness
to challenge ooeiSJ.' any move to
organise a Southern revolt against
Mr. Truman.
There was some speculation that
Speaker Sam Raybuin. whose par
ty loyalty plea Monday night creat
ed an uproar may have held out
hope of a compromise on the Dem
ocratic platform.
Rayburn said he did not believe
there would be a split In the Smith
and that possible agreement might
be reached on a platlorm.
Gov. James F. Byrnes of South
Carolina one of Mr. Truman's
chief political foes said this mlRht
mean the president will not seek
reelection.
Platform agreement. Byrnes
said, would mean concession of the
civil rights and national health in
surance Issues. He called the In
surance proposal "socialised medi
cine." And he added he did not
believe Mr. Truman would run on
such a. platform.
CAMPAIGN
The conference had been widely
heralded as the possible starting
point for an organised "beat Tru
man" campaign. But Byrnes and
others made it clear they had
come to the conference with no In
tention of launching such a move.

gia told reporters this was neither
the time nor the place to begin
such a drive. Other States' Rights
leaders declared they will have
plenty of time In which to decide
a course of action after Mr. Tru
man discloses his Intentions.

ing observed throughout the nation
this week, for the purpose of in
stilling In the minds of people the
Importance of eaucatlon. This is
sponsored by the NEA in coopera
tion with the U.S. olfice of educa
tion, the National Congress of Par
ents and Teachers, and the Amer
ican Legion.
At Sacred Heart American Edu
cation Week opened yesterday
morning with a High Mass raid by
Father Domnlck and sung by the
hlghschool choir. This was in rec
ognition of the Religious freedom
which Is enjoyed in the United
States.
Enthusiastically, the students
participated In an assembly today,
centered around American Educa
tion Week. Members of the Ameri
can history class conducted a panel
discussion on the theme, unite for
freedom. In addition the Francll
lans sand, "My Own America."
The freshman class, too, have been
busy making posters Illustrating
the theme, unite for freedom. As
a final step in observing Ameri
can Education Week students of
the Junior and senior classes have
entered the essay contest based on
this same theme, unite for free
dom. The Junior Red Cross is being
organized at the academy n:w. In
cluded in the activities of the group
are these, each classroom will be
asked to fill basket for a less
fortunate family. These baskets
will be distributed the night before
Thanksgiving. Also favors for the
hospitals will be made by the
girls of the high school. And too, a
Red Cross first aid course will be
offered to the students Interested.
The general consensus of every
one this morning, sleepy through
they were, was this: "The 1951
sophomore hop surely did rank on
the very top."
Death Claims
Mrs. Parrish
MERRILL Oldtimers In this
area learned with regret of the
death In Rlpon, Calif., of Mrs. Nel
lie I. Parrish.
Mrs. Parrish lived In Merrill
from 1905 to 1817 'and wes very
active in civic affairs, being one
of the original founders of the Mer
rill Library club. She taught In
Merrill and Henley schools, at the
Lone Pine and Llbby schools no
longer in existence.
- Born In 1882 near Jan Jose, Mrs.
Parrish died October 28, and fu
neral services were conducted Oc
tober 31, In the California town.
She celebrated her 89th birthday
last January 20, and was feted by
the Rebekah lodge of which the
was a member. She was gold
star mother, active In the Ameri
can Legion auxiliary, and a mem
ber of the Native Daughters of the
Golden West."
