In his letter to Lovett. Johnson
said he finds it difficult to believe
that an administrative force as
large as the present one is nec
essary, even though "war has be
come more complex." The senator
added:
"In some respects, it Is even
more startling to observe the large
numbers of army and air force
colonels and air force captains and
other high-ranking officers in
Washington who seem to have as
one of their principal assignments
acting as 'messenger boys.'

legal action.
A petition for an Immediate end
of segregation was presented the
board last night by A. P. Tureaud.
Negro attorney. He warned that if
the petition is not granted "legal
action will be taken."
Tureaud said he presented the
petition on behalf of Negro parents
but added the petition was not
sponsored by any organized group.
On receiving the petition. Dr.
Clarence Scheps, board member,
commented:
"This is a grave question and
we're in no position to discuss It
now."
The board took the petition under
advisement.
