Tomorrow Is the day, men!
Zero your watches, peel your
eyes, slip a load tn the chamber
and get set (or D-hour at 11 o'clock
high noon. The duck season, eager
ly awaited since last year Is finally
here. And so are the game war
dens. And the ducks and geese,
so far. I remain a trifle pessl
mlstlo on that score. Remember
the last two years? But so far
to good so why borrow trouble.
Really the most amating thing
about the duck season Is the num
ber of chapa who go out alter
swearing last December mat if
anyone aver caught 'em dead on
a duck swamp again they - hoped
they shot 'em.
Maybe that's what makes such
a big business of it You swear
off every year and give away all
your gear and then have to start
fresh every fall picking up boots,
waders, decoys, shells (I'm still
shooting low base loads from the
war years) and all the other para
phanella that goes with the great
and ancient sport ot duck hunting.

With tha federal tax going up
en gambling I wonder now many
extra men they will have to hire
to check on all the football pools
around the country? I would esti
mate that there are no fewer than
two hundred pools In Klamath
county alone, ranging In price
from a nickel to ten bucks. Foot
ball pools, of course are like poker
games. No one ever wins one. At
least to hear 'em tell It. Perhaps
we'll have some headlines around
town soon when the federals move
in and put the arm on gambling.
After all, a football pool is a vi
cious thing. A lot worse than the
licensed card games. Demoralizing.
Awful. Shudder to think of it. We
really should do something about
it. (My suggestion would be to
fix It so I win once in a while.)
But then maybe its all Just an
outgrowth of the football scandals.
And basketball scandals. Haven't
heard whether the Mills colleg-t

way finances or politics, but there's
one thing everyone can ne sure oi:
The Sixth street viaduct needs
widening, and it needs widening

The state has acquired property
tor the right of way, there re
mains the construction Job of pro
viding four lanes for traffic instead
of the present two.
A lew years ago, when Sixth
street south ot the viaduct was
rebuilt to four lanes, the state
highway people said that the street
carried the heaviest traffic of any
two lane road in the state highway
system. Well brothers, the viaduct
is still part ot that street and it's
still two lanes only and the traf
fic hasn't grown any less.
Let's have some action.
It's assumed that the city of
Klamath Falls committee on high
way problems really is the "lntra
clty" committee rather than "in
tercity" as It is commonly called.
lntraclty would have to do with
highway problems within the city
limits; intercity would have to do
with highway problems outside the
city, between Klamath Falls and
other towns.

WASHINGTON, I If Gen. Mark
Clark becomes the ambassador of
the United States to the Vatican
he will be ambassador to one of
the youngest- states in the world.
The state of the Vatican City,
as it is officially known, dates
only from 1929. But its monarch is
Pope Plus XH and the papacy Is
one of the oldest sovereignties in
the world. The present city state
was established as a temporal
kingdom of the pope by agree
ment in 1929 with Benito Musso
lini, then dictator of Italy.
Also, Gen. Clark, if he becomes
ambassador to the Roman Catho
lic church state, will be a diplo
mat at the only country in the
world that hasn't even enough
room to house Its official guests.
Tet he will be representative
to a world power.
Those are a few of the contra
dictions that make the question ot
diplomacy with the Vatican confus
ing, apart from purely religious
considerations.
Pres. Truman has asked the sen
ate to approve sending Clark to
'the Vatican as ambassador. The
senate has to give its consent to
presidential nominations for am
bassadorships. Clark would be the
first full U.S. ambassador to the
papal court.
So the decision Involves some
thing new in U.S. diplomacy. Leav
ing aside the religions dispute, it
. is an interesting decision because
of the unique character of the
state to which Clark would be ac
credited. ' (The general, it he becomes am
: bassador, will have no surprises
In store for him. As the world war
two conqueror of Rome, he Is fa
, miliar with the Vatican set-up, and
Is a personal friend of Pope Plus
XII, although Clark is an Episco
palian.) The Vatican City state consists
of but 108.T acres. Its population
Is only a little over 1000 people.

Pres. Truman's popularity contin
ues at a low level In the latest
nationwide test by the Institute, a
large increase has taken place in
the number of voters who think
he will seek office again next year.
Eight out ot every ten voters
are convinced, from what they
have observed and read about Mr.
Truman's actions, that he is a
candidate for re-election. Five
months ago. only halt that num
ber believed he would run.
The sharp change In atltude was
found when Interviewers for the
Institute questioned a cross-section
of voters throughout the country
on trie following:

This marks a slight gain since

ing reauy new nas developed
about spastic colon or Irritable
bowel, here I go again.
First diarrhea and then consti
pation often accompanied by dis
comfort In the abdomen and growl
ing sounds are the common signs
f this widespread ailment Most
of those who have a spastic colon
think that they are constipated be
cause after a period of fairly loose
movements, there may he a de
lay of a day or more before another
occurs.
' This idea is wrong. The waste
material is passing through the
bowels too fast rather thsn too
slowly. The wave-like motions of
the Intestine which carry the waste
matter downward occur too often
and produce discomfort When
there Is nothing temainlng in the
bowel, there can, of course, be no
bowel movement no matter bow the
wave-like motions occur.
People who are nervous, thin,
and easily upset are especially
likely to become afflicted. The ner
vous system sends unconscious
messsges to the bowel which
causes the Intestinal waves io come
more frequently. This, of course,
makes the symptoms of a spastic
colon worse. Nearly everyone who
has It, therefore, notices that the
symptoms are worse when they
are angry, anxious or annoyed.
Some foods, particularly raw
fruits .and vegetables, Irritate the
walls of the bowel and stimulate
the Intestines to increased peri
staltic waves. Cathartics do the
same thing only more so.
The strain of modern living,
therefore, has an unfavorable ef
fect. The diet, too, Is of course
Important. The laxative foods and
cathartic drugs should be avoided.
A diet which contains a high pro
portion of what are called bland
foods is therefore desirable.
Such a diet consists largely ol
such foods as cooked cereaU, milk
products, creamed soups, eggs, and
fish. Drugs may help somewhat
but It Is best whenever post-ible to
do without drugs as they merely
bring temporary relief.
A disappointing feature nt this
uncomfortable but not dnrigcroiu
condition Is that even when re
covery seems to be complete, al
most any nervous strain or Indis
cretion In eating will start It off
agsln. Spastic colon, however, has
no relation to cancer.
August, when a similar survey
found 31 percent approving. ST per
cent disapproving and 13 perceut
undecided.
A little over a year ago, at the
beginning of the Korean war, the
proportion expressing approval was
4 percent. At the start of hti pros
sent term of office it was 69 per
cent.
Among Democratic voters his
popularity is up slightly today; tn
fact a clear majority In the party
