Irrigation Aid
From McNary?
PORTLAND, HI McNary dam
considered a navigation and pow
er project may also provide some
Irrigation, a bureau1 of reclama
tion report said Wednesday.
The prospects are not too en
couraging for large-scale Irriga
tion, tbs bureau said, but more
studies will be made.
The report said some 33.000
acres In a one-mile strip on eith
er side of the Columbia river
could be Irrigated with only a
small amount of pumping. Other
areas, however, would require
more pumping.

100 feet would be required. An
other 61,200 acres could be Irri
gated with a lift of 450 feet.
A 700-foot lift also would be

districts and north of Stage gulch.
Land west of the Umatilla river
could be reached better by water
from the projected John Day dam.
Water from McNary would have
to flow through a long1 canal and
siphon to reach the area. East of
the Umatilla river, tne cost could
not be cut below that of the
present privately developed Brow
neU ditch.
A report expected In 1953 will
consider 227,000 acres near the
John Day project.

for funds. Workers for business,
residental and rural areas were ap
pointed at a Monday evening meet
ing. Vern Owens, Klamath Falls,
told of the various agencies aided
by the community chest. Included
were the boy scouts, campfire
girls, and teenage center.
George Milne, director, reported
on the progress of the potato festi
val, and suggested that storage
space be acquired for all festival
equipment, so that it could be kept
from year to year.
Harold Hendrickson reported
that sacks of potatoes had been
given FHA delegates when they
held their district convention here
last week.

WASHINGTON. 1 The FBI
has announced the arrest of 21
persons on charges of fraud
against the government in connec
tion with the QI. educational
program.
Fourteen arrests were made in
Miami, two in Detroit, one in
Dayton, O. two In New York
City and three In the Newark, N.J.
area.
FBI Director J. Edgar Hoover
identified those arrested as em
ployes, officials, and owners of
live vocational scnoois, mauaing
the Berlin School of Languages of
America Inc., at Miami.
Hoover said the alleged frauds
total more than 1350.000.
In the past 10 months, he added,
FBI investigations have resulted In
the arrest of more than 300 per
sons charged with veterans school
frauds totaling close to 11,000,000
(Ml.
Under the O.I. plan, the govern
ment foots the bill for a veterans
tuition and other school expenses.
Hoover said the alleged frauds in
volved In today's arrests Include
faked records of student enroll
ment and attendance.
Attendance records for O.I. stu
dents were certified by forged
names of legitimate teachers, rela
tives, acquaintances and neirhbors
to reflect these persons taught the
veterans whereas no Instruction
was given." Hoover said telling of
sue minim operations.
Many Seek
State Bonus
Probably around 3500 Klamath
county veterans of the last war
have applied for the state vets
bonus which might not be paid for
a long, long time.
Ted Case, veterans service of
ficer, said it is impossible right
now to pin down the exact figure
of bonus applications, because the
blanks have been filled out by the
various veterans organizations and
in every town in the county as well
as in his office. . . .
But the state Bent down 5700
blanks for the county, and more
than half of them have been used.
The $600 maximum bonus was
voted last November at the gen
eral election, but no provision was
made to raise the money.
Since that time various alleys of
possible revenue have been ex
plored and discarded, and now a.
branch of the federal government
nas termed the bonus inflationary.
Money lenders won't bid on state
bonds for it.
But applications here are still
being made out daily. Case said.
The county clerk's office likewise
has been Busy with the bonus.
Since certified copies of military
service discharges must go in with
the applications, the office has
made certified photostats of about
1400 discharges since last May,
free of charge.
School Slated
For Addition
Flans for a three-room addition
to Malm high school are being
drawn by the Morrison-Howard ar
chitectural firm.
A mock-up and floor plan of the
proposed structure was delivered
to tne county school board yester
day. The addition would include a
35x38 foot all-purpose room and
two 32x22 foot classrooms, plu.s
lavatory, storage room and
corridor.
It would be hooked onto the back
end of the present building and
be of construction and facing to
fit in with the appearance of the
present building.
Carrol Howe, county school su
perintendent, said he hoped the
addition could De mini lor aoout
$50,000, and that construction could
not start until next spring.

Fires Blamed
On Hunters
MOUNT SHASTA-Slnce the be
ginning of hunting season, cureless
hunters have caused 10 fires, three
of which were caused by aban
doned campflres and seven were
caused by careless smokers. The
largest fire burned bIx acrqs be
fore it was controlled.
The rainfall during the past two
weeks has not been of enough
intensity to bring the lire season
to a close. The rains did lessen
the danger to a point wheir most
of the lookouts and fire crews
were terminated or placed on pro
ject work.
To date, the 1951 season total
shows that the Shasta forest had
to combat a total of ' 103 fires.
Lightning caused 129 and 73 were
man-caused. The breakdown of the
man-caused fires shows that 19
were railroad caused, seven by
campflres, 32 by smokers, five by
debris-burning, one by Incendiary
ana nine irom miscellaneous cause.
The total burned area is 1723
acres, of which 669 acres is na
tional forest, 1003 acres private
land within the Shasta forest boun
dary and 51 acres of private land
outside of the forest boundary but
within the Shasta forest protection
area.
Two hunters, Claude W. Bolnn
of Dunsmulr, and Dennis W. Hop
kins of Redwood City, were ap
prehended and cited to appear In
the Squaw Valley Justice court a'.
McCloud, for leaving campflres un
attended. Both persons pled guilty
to the charges and Justice of the
Peace Hanson fined each tU.OO for
a single Instance of those who
have prayed and worshipped to
gether habitually, to have become
separated."
