ings with three women he wooed
with smooth talk two years ago
were retold in circuit court yes
terday. The 76-year-old lotharlo was
brought into court from Statevtlte
prison where he is serving a two
to 10 year sentence for a confi
dence game charge.
The circuit court case Involves
$5500 found in Engel's underwear
when he was in Jail awaiting trial.
The three women are seeking to
recover a total of 123.200. One also
has a suit for $200,000 damages.
Engel was convicted of swind
ling Mrs. Reseda Oorrran. 41, a
red-haired widow of $8700. She tes
tified Engel. who left her waiting
at the altar, returned $5000 but
she wants the $3700 balance plus
$200,000 damages.
Another claimant to Engel's $5500
is Mrs. Florence Barrete, 52, who
sail Engel disappeaicd with $13,000

Mrs. Pauline Langton Engel of
New York City, whom Engel calls
"my only real wile," is seeking to
recoup $7500. She said the money
found in Engel's underwear was a
loan from her for possible bond.
She said police impounded it wrong-
luny.
There also is a claim against
the money by a man, J. Edward
Jones, Engel's former lawyer. He
says Engel still owes him $500.
Engel told newsmen he expects
to be released from prison be
fore the end of the year.
"Then the state will have to pay
me $500,000 damages," he said.

Reserve Low
WASHINGTON. Wt The nation
moved into the fall season with
butter reserves only about half
as large as a year ago, the agri
culture department reported today.
The reserves help meet consumer
needs during the fall and winter,
seasons during which production
usually does not match demand.
Officials expressed belief, how
ever, that the reserves will be suf
ficient because butter consumption
has dropped considerably below
last year's level.
A year ago, reserves totaled 234,
000,000 pounds, the bulk of which
was owned by the government un
der a producer price support pro
gram. Reserves presently are
about 113,000,000 pounds, virtually
an neia oy the trade.

Booby Trap

cians are trying to save the hands
of a man who police say appeared
to be the Innocent victim of
booby-trap set against burglars.
Frank Gordon, 44, of Royersford,
Pa., was seriously Injured Mon
day by the trap set up by Leon
Fralinger. Fralinger said he rigged
up the device because his cottage
had been burglarized twice.
Gordon told police he had been
crab hunting with two friends near
Frallnger's cottage. He left them,
he said, to look for a possible
clubhouse for a fishing group. He
stumbled against the booby-trap in
Frallnger's cottage while looking
for a light switch, he told police.
The little finger and the top ol
the middle finger of Gordon's left
nana were amputated last mgnt in
an eiiort to save ni nana.
State police Trooper James Craig
said Gordon's friends and residents
In the area verified Gordon's story
and that there seemed to be no
intention to burglarize the cottage.
At first, police said a breaking
and entering charge might be
lodged' against Gordon because
locks were broken to gain access
to the Fralinger cottage.
The trap consisted of an electric
fuse on dynamite with an expen
sive fishing reel as the "bait."
