ton will be nude on Monday, De
cember M. between the hours of I
a. m. end 1 p. m.
Each year, for the past U years,
bird watchers all over the nation
take one day during the Christmas
week to make a pilgrimage Into the
open country to search for birds, to
record the specie and to tally the
number present.
The Christmas season la selected
for this undertaking because It Is
a period midway between the migra
tion seasons. The birds who go south
each year hare generally passed on
to lands with milder winter climate
and It Is Hill too early In the winter
for the birds In the southlands to
start thinking about (otaf north to
spend the summer.
Few New
The bird population for this are
Is at the lowest ebb of the year as
only those birds that live with us
the year around or those who pre
fer to winter here with us rather
than go on to warmer areas will be
the only specie to be noted In the
Christmas bird count.
The Christmas count made by th
Itature society In IMS was on De-
cember 38. It was taken by eleven
members working In five groups. A
total of 4824 birds were counted be
longing to 60 different species. The
day was stormy and the heavy over
cast did not give good visibility. The
temperature ranged from 21 to ST
degrees, the lakes were frosen over
but the rivers were open and the
4 .to f lnchs of snow on the ground
made it a rugged day from the
standpoint of the comfort of the
bud watchers: however, the day
was chosen because it presented
the very factor that strike hard at
the life of the birds at this season.
