How About
Dreaming
A Bit?
vjnttt Hj r nn;i Ti
The first window that could be
moved up or down wa Invented In
Holland In the 17th century.
By BILL JENKINS
THE dream department la In opera
tion again.
A bunch of the office personnel
were sitting around thla morning
chewing the fat over things In gen
eral and speculating aa to the prob
able outcome of things here and
elsewhere. Every time we get to
doing that the fact keep coming up
that we have all the possibilities for
a pretty big country. So why not
llp over Into the dream department
and take look?
With aa much livestock aa we
have, why not a major processing
plant? Th expert who should
know say there lan't much standing
In the way of a really big packing
plant moving In. Balance your live
stock economy, ballyhoo the propo
sition and let nature take It course.
Right now we don't have an awful
lot to offer except for beef. We'd
need other things such aa sheep,
hog and poultry. But they all do
well In thla area, and there haa
alwaya been a good living over the
years In the livestock Industry.
UflTH all the barley we grow
around here, why not a brewery?
I seem to remember rumor that
at one time the water supply of th
basin waa surveyed and pronounced
fit for brewing purposes. If go,
biewery would serve a double pur
pose. You'd have the beer and the
payroll and the business, and when
you were all through brewing you
would (till have the residue left to
bp made Into stock food. Mix It
with cheap molasses or whatever It
is they use nowadays and make It
up Into blocks. If we could do that
we could feed cattle over the winter
and get away from the expense of
shipping them aouth. Maybe Just
a dream, but It' a nice one. at least.
City Ponders
Hotel Tavern
Permit Again
Reconsideration or a tavern de- i
nlal waa agreed last night by the
city council following a previous 1
turn-down of Oeorge Stevens' re
quext for a tavern license at th
old Hall hotel.
Attorney L. Orth Slsemore, repre- i
sentlng Stevens, advised the council i
that when It denied his client's re- j
quest It was not for a new license 1
but for a renewal. Application waa
denied last week.
Because hi lease expiree at the
Kern hotel at the end of thla month
Steven want to place a licensed
premise In the Hall hotel now being 1
remodeled. I
Support
In supporting the request SUe- I
more showed the city fathers archi
tectural sketches depicting proposed
interior and exterior improvement
to the Hall hotel which Stevens pur
chased recently.
The attorney said Improvement
would result In an attractive build
ing on Main street, but that con
tinued construction would depend on
building the bar.
He stated operation of the hotel
would not be profitable with only
20 rooms.
In conclusion Slsemore stated the
council was In effect taking a li
cense away from a man who had
done business In Klamath Fall for
18 years.
T Many?
Councilman Alfred Condrey re
marked the council had given a lot
of consideration to the application
and turned It down because they
did not went to sea another beer
parlor established on Main street of
the city.
Sash weight, window cord and
pulleys were Invented by th Dutch
about I860.

BART of the picture has already
been filled In. Timber remanu
facturtng plants are already here
and more are certainly In the pic
ture. The old days of Hp It down
and ship It out raw are ending, and
the reftnlshlng processes are here.
And with the new methods comes
an Increased payroll for the men
and for the community.
THE agricultural possibilities of
the basin have barely been tapped
to date. There are plenty of things
that will grow here If they are given
the chance. Take ehenies for In
stance. All the ornamental cherry
trees In town do well almost every
year. They bear Just at a time when
all the other ehenies arc oft the
market. Even if you get three crops
out of five you'd be doing better
than they average over In the valley.
And a huge market Just to the south
lor everything you can raise. Given
a chance there are other crop that
would be money maker in the area.
THE climate In the basin (despite
better than the average for a lot
of the Northwest There is a lot of
country left around us that could
be exploited to bring In the tourist
dollar. The upper lake ia still to be
developed for sport The other re
sort lakes around will bear improve
ment too. Some day we may be
aoie to oner attractions with a
much pulling power a the highly
touted California and Washington
aieas do now. Why not?
ND last but not least, we have a
sound business and industrial
growth developing without an over
growth in population and conse
quent overbuilding that would have
to be accounted for some day in the
luiure.
. Stop and dream It over and this
1 a pretty good country with
pretty good future. If it wasn't, few
ox us would stay here.

Wednesday, December IS, 1936 That bad luck comes In
streaks la the opinion of Edwsrd Propat of 737 North Ninth.
While motoring to hi ranch In the Merrill district on Sun
day, he lost a pointer bird dog which he valued highly. It
la thought the dog left the car between the Esell ranch
and Mack'a store. Speaking of the car, It was stolen last
night when Mr. Prnpst parked It for a short time at
Main and Seventh. With the aid of an officer he searched
the surrounding section and at five o'clock this morning
found It on the road to Keno. The party or parties who
apparently stole the car had deserted It upon running nut
of fas and when Propat reached the spot It wa frozen,
Thursday, December 18, 1928 If In passing down the street
you notice a red tag on an awning reading as follows:
"Our Air to make life longer and more comfortable for
tall men. If, In feet, this were seven high, the Longfcllows
would not swear or sigh," you will know that some Long
fellow ha bumped hi head or knocked hi hat off dodalng
the awnings. It Is an aim of the club to have awnings raised
to seven feet above the sidewalk.
