December 5 through December 17
and Is labeled the "Everybody Helps"
filbert campaign. The object of
which, obviously. Is to boost the
tale of filbert.
Th committee for this group
point out that filbert are the rich
est of all tree nut and ar the
lowest In price. USDA figures place
this year' crop at around 45 mil
lion pounds, so you can see that It
will take soma tolling.
I can vouch, however, for the fil
bert and will go out on a limb far
enough to atate that they make fine
eating, particularly when salted and
roasted. My grandfather had a fil
bert ranch along the bank of the
McKenzie over In the valley a num
ber of yean ago and that's where
I learned to like them. Everything
tht bluejays and squirrels didn't get,
we did. Those were the day when
I was paid a nickel (worth a nickel
then i for every jay and red squirrel
I could knock out of the trees, with
ammunition paid for. The easiest
and most pleasant way of earning a
little money I have ever tried.
But, anyway, If you feel like help
ing the poor old filbert grower, now
I the time. Rush out to the nearest
store and buy up a bunch, roast 'em
and enjoy yourselves.
