Labor Chief
Raps Defense
Plant Moves
WASHINGTON, Dee. t CP) A
labor union wants congress to study
th possibility that moving defense
plants Inland from sescoasts may
do more economic harm than mili
tary good.
The question was raised by th
executive council of the Independ
ent International Association of
Machinists In letter to President
Truman and all members of con
gresa. "The cure may be worse than the
disease." Union President Al Hayee
told newsmen. He referred to the
recent practice, especially by the
air force, of urging defense plant
to coot away from area where
they might be vulnerable to bomb
ing In any way.
"Many responsible cltluni be
lieve that Ui resultant oconomie
blighting of large section ol our
country will cause a much damage
to our nation aa a possible future
bombing," the union resolution
aid.
Hayee said th plant dispersal
program often causea workers to
loss their Jobs, industry to lose
profits, and the government to co
counter heavy expenses.
