Most of the survivors of the Unl
verslty of Oklahoma men's dormU
tory fire that burned three to death
and injured 21 early Saturday will
be able to attend shcool as usual
today.
Thanks to the generosity of thou
sands, they are clothed again, have
new books, are eating regularly and
live in a brick dormitory. The two
story wooden structure they occu
pied, a former navy barracks,
caught tire at 2:45 a. m. Saturday
and was razed within an hour and
a half.
The tragic news drew an Im
mediate response of cash donations
and clothing. The Red Cross was
giving a 4150 clothing allotment to
the 340 survivors, many of whom
escaped only in pajamas or under
wear.
One Oklahoma City church con
trtbuted 11000. University agencies
arranged loans and credit for books
and food.
Those who died were Maurice
Aheara, 36. KilUngsworth. Conn,
credited with saving several lives
before being trapped; Sammy La
rue. 20, Clinton, okla, and Price
Starts, 30, Oklahoma City.

That was the advice to house
wives from Richard Baum. market
analyst for the Oregon wheat com
mission who spoke to the Oregon
Wheat Growers league.
Baum brought up the sublect
while discussing what he said was
the poor quality of bread the av
erage household consumes daily. He
also urged the Oregon wheat ranch
ers to grow a better quality grain.
The matter of mamma squeezing
the loaf came out when Baum said
the housewife is much to blame for
the quality of bread she puts on
the family table.
"The average housewife has fan
en into a faulty buying habit and
uses a squeeze test in selecting a
loaf of bread. The loaf which feels
the spongiest Is selected as the
freshest. This Is not true. Spongy
bread is not fresh bread but only
nau Daaea dough." Baum ex
plained.
He accused bakers of uslna chem
ical bread softeners to replace fats.

not soon forget that gloomy guy
called "Digger O'Dell" who plays
the friendly undertaker.
In civilian life "Digger" la
known as John Brown, a peculiar
handle for an undertaker. Anyhow,
in his IS years of broadcasting
Brown eHimates that he has made
10.000 live broadcasts, and with re-
broadcasts and transcriptions fig
ures he has run his total to over
15 M0.
He holds whit he. believes is a
record of having performed in eight
shows In one day. He regularly ap
pears In seven shows every week.
Once, in appearing on FTed Allen's
show. Brown did 20 different characters.
To top it all off "Digger" actually
did work for an undertaker at one
time. That was in New York In
1030 when times were tough and he
had to make a little pin money to
keep body and soul together.
