tification work, Elmer Johnwn,
lay there were 347 acre ot pots
toe entered for certification this
year. Just over 3000 acre passed.
Milk Cow
Decline
Levels Off
After drifting down hill for about
five years, this year th number of
milk cows In thu country seems to
have leveled off.
Ear'y this year, farmers In all
part of th country had a record
number of younf stock In propor
tion to the number of mature milk
cow. V any lighter culling could
bring a fairly lanre increase In cow
number In all regions.
However, economists of the U. 8.
department of agriculture say any
Increases are likely to be moderate.
And they even look for further de
cline In cow numbers In the west
ern com belt, where cash grains
and meat animal still offer better
returns to farmer than does dairy
tanning.
More Milk
In the past few years, by keep
ing better cows, culling out the low
est producers, and feeding more
concentrate and better roughages,
dairy farmers generally have nun
aged to get more milk per cow.
Up to this year the more milk per
cow has just about offset the ef
fect oi toe uetiuic w auim. cuw
numbers.
N This year, with cow numbers
steady and a record output of milk
per cow, dairy farmers have turned
out more milk every month than
during the corresponding month of
last year.
On the other hand, the use of
whole milk and cream has contin
ued about the same a a year ago.
So the Increase in total output of
milk has gone into manufactured
dairy product less Into production
of evaporated and dry whole milk,
but more Into making butter and
cheese.

cation standards this year, Johnson
point out that IMS records show

were rejected.
Reason for Improvement this
year, says Johnson, include better
quality seed, better rogulng, fewer
insects, more effective insecticides
and not to be overlooked lot
of good luck.

fied varieties fourteen.
Looking at the entire potato seed
certification picture. Netted Oem
potatoes stand number one In total
acreage. White Rose are second,
then comes Burbanks. Altogether,
Johnson certified 18 different pota
to varieties this year.

named grand champion steer of the
1949 international livestock show

pounds, compared with 1250 pounds
for the grand champion. The reserve
1 owned by Mr. and Mr. Henry
Sears, owners of the Chino farms

"Judge Roy Bean" was paraded
through th Judging ring by W. T.
Posey, county agent at Fort Stock
ton, Tex. Posey said th steer was
fattened to top grade by 43 boys and
seven girls, members of the Pecos
county club.

area, who have the required farm
ing experience, are eligible to Me
application for farming on ot th
50 homestead unit in th Black
Canyon area ot the Boise project,
near Caldwell. Idaho, the Regional
office of the Bureau of Reclamation
today advised this newspaper.
Qualified war veterans and a
small number of homestead relin
quishers will have highest prefer
ence for the unit. All application
received by 3 p. m. on January 3.
1950, will be considered a simul
taneously filed. Already euOO per
sons have requested application
blank but only a small number
have returned them to th bureau.

The land jnits will be awarded
to qualified entrymen In th order
in which their name are publicly
drawn by lot from a bowl at a
date and place to be decided on
later.
The farm will cost th winner
the small government homestead
fee and Irrigation construction
charges. The latter may be repaid
over a period of years. Interest fee.
Land units vary In six from 51 to
13S Irrigable acre each. Adjacent
cultivated lands are largely adapted
to dairying, and other type of live
stock farming, including the produc
tion of alfalfa, pasture, clover,
wheat, oats, barley, and pea.
