Captain Crommelin's
Bid for Hearing On
Charges Gets Backing
WASHINGTON, Nov. 31
Nary Captain John O. Crommelln,
Who would still like to present his
arguments about Pentagon policy In
formal court martial proceedings,
found 17m pa thy today on Capitol
Hill.
Senator Bridget (R-NH), member
of tha armed aerrtee committee,
told reporter that "Captain Crom
awlln It entitled either to be
rleared or found guilty of the
charges against him."
' What the atria tor wai referrlnc to
Wa announcement that the nary
Bow considered Crommelln' case
closed. This Indicated there
would be no court martial to su
persede the formal reprimand ad
ministered the veteran of naval avi
ation. The reprimand questioned his
fitness for command. Crommelln
had npicswl hope he would be
ft ven a court martial but under
navy regulations ha could not de
mand such action.
All Over Ceantry
Bridges, In the capital for a brief
visit from his New Hampshire
home, told newsmen that "people
all over the country are talking
about this situation" and that ad
vocates of the navy art 'entitled
to speak out"
The senator also wondered out
loud about the reasons for tha fir
ing of Admiral Louis Dent eld. who
with other admirals testified before
tha house armed services committee
about tha row of tha navy with
the air force and defense depart
ment. Secretary of the Navy Matth
ews ousted Oenfeld from the post
of chief of naval operations. Matth
ews' letter to the president, asking
approval of that, said Dent eld no
longer was qualified for the job. He
noted that he earlier had approved
reappointment of the admiral to the
Job.
Bridget tald he waa convinced
Denfeld waa fired because of his
testimony.
"How could he change In two or
three months from being a damned
competent man to run the navy to
one who was not qualified." Bridges
or deny the interim appointment of
Admiral Forrest P. Sherman as
Denfeld 's successor.
Bridges answered that he didn't
see how the senate could consider
the nomination without getting Into
that question.
Crommelln told reporters, after
the navy announced his case was
closed, that It was his "fervent
hope" that congress would make
further Investigation of tha defense
department.
