Ship Aground,

Walk Ashore
VANCOUVER. B. C- Nov. T
Fifty-one passenger and the 35
man crew of the 1134-ton 8S Chel
ohsln last night walked aafcly to
shore over too yards of barnacled
ocean bed when the coastal steamer
grounded In blinding fog on the
beach at the entrance to Vancouver
harbor.
Inbound from up-coast Powell riv
er, the 175-foot vessel acrapted on
onto the beach at low tide. It waa
the worst fog to hit Vancouver and
the lower British Columbia main
land this year. All marine traffle
had been halted before the Chel
ohsln attempted to crawl Into har
bor. Busy
Union 8teanuhlps, limited, own
ers of the Chelohsin, were too busy
evacuating the passengers and pre
paring salvage operation to com
ment on the grounding. Some re
ports said the ship wag holed, tak
ing water and may break up, but
these could not be confirmed.
Passengers, carrying their lug
gage, and some of them toting dogs
in ship crallngs, climbed down Jac
obs ladders to the beach and
t- uidled across the soggy ocean bed
to shore. The tide wag about a
mile out at the time.
Prom the shore the passengers
scaled cliffs leading up to Van
couver's famed Stanley park. Buses
took them to a downtown bus de
pot. Taxis whisked them to home
and hotels from there.
